£3m signing issues rallying cry to improve Wrexham’s away form

improve Wrexham's away form

£3m summer signing Dominic Hyam has issued a rallying cry for Wrexham to improve their away form. The Red Dragons only have two wins on the road, which is drastically lower than previous season stats.

Finally, we’re in 2026, and while everyone else mourns the end of the festive period, Wrexham fans stress over their own worrying reasons. And no, it’s much bigger than their routine injury concerns.

In fact, having received the positive fitness updates of Andy Cannon & O’Brien, Wrexham is in its pink of health. Sorrowfully, the duo’s return doesn’t improve the fears prevailing in the fans’ minds with this dreadful 1st January date.

Nothing against the date itself, but its connection with Wrexham’s history has been surprisingly bizarre.

That’s because, turning the pages about Wrexham’s home fixtures on New Year’s, it’s as excellent as it can be. But scenarios change much too fast for the worse when reading their away record in the first game of the year.

Note out the last 4 years, for instance. An away defeat in 2022 against Notts County, a home win in 2023, followed by another home win in 2024, just to revert back to losing on the road in 2025 against Barnsley.

The pattern’s far too prominent to ignore. No matter the opponent or even the competition, Wrexham have presented their worst versions on the field in away openers. And lo! The EFL Championship wants to see more of it as they match up the Dragons against Blackburn Rovers today.

Captain Dom Hyam urges for a winning change

If anything, the fears just escalate, noting it’s the same Rovers against whom Wrexham were forced to pull back a last-minute equaliser in November. Well, but if that time, it was a defender in Max Cleworth rescuing them a point, this time, Dominic Hyam has taken the baton.

And rightly so, as the standing Captain urges the high-flying Wrexham to continue on their winning ways, on the back of an exceptionally poor away record. As quoted by the BBC Sport, Hyam said: “I feel like we need to get a few more results on the road.”

A fair question could be the £3m summer signing’s distress on Wrexham’s historically poor away record in New Year games. The answer is, the club’s form has gone from bad to worse while building towards this 1st Jan fixture, having gone winless 8 consecutive times away.

Barring the early consecutive wins against Millwall & Norwich, Wrexham hasn’t ever claimed the complete 3 points on the road this season. That’s why, despite Blackburn facing a crippling injury outbreak upfront, Dragon fans would be mentally prepared should an upset hit them.

Wrexham’s away form is Good or Bad?

I know, this question is like asking how many beans make five. Still, read along as we delve into a focused perspective on Wrexham’s away record.

Take a look at Playmakerstats’ tally, as they line up the best away-performing sides in the top-4 English tiers. To everyone’s surprise, Wrexham ain’t just there, but tied competing against a PL giant like Arsenal.

Agreed, with the Top Flight clubs playing far fewer games than the other divisions, this stat exaggerates the excellence of lower-tier clubs. Still, finding Wrexham among the best is enough to surprise their fans themselves.

Well, actually, this tally hides the club’s contrasting performances in League Two & the Championship, giving rise to such numbers.

If you remember, the Welsh club clocked an excellent 10-game unbeaten streak away to finish their 2024/25 season. That’s not forgetting, it included as many as 8 wins and just 2 draws.

Add them to Wrexham’s Championship away points this season, and the tally matches exactly 37.

As for the comparison against contemporary tier-2 clubs, there’s a reason one sees only Wrexham there. Having jumped divisions in 2025, Parky & side had a crushing lead to be challenged by any other side, let alone Coventry, whose promotion remains almost certified.

That way, it was a fairly brilliant 2025 on the road. Let’s hope for an even better start to the New Year as Wrexham travels to Ewood Park today.
