Wrexham fans wish to sack Phil Parkinson and appoint a new boss to guide the team to the Premier League.
Less than 24 hours have gone by since referee Oliver Langford blew his full time whistle at Swansea, and as expected, Wrexham fans can’t get over the derby defeat. Some fans will feel sorry and helpless to see a decent team turn into mediocre without a set of first choice fullbacks.
Others will criticise the squad’s inability during Welsh derbies. Because let’s be real, falling to all of Newport County, Cardiff City and Swansea is totally embarrassing. The remaining chunk of the fanbase will be picking into individual player mistakes and they also have their reasons to do so.
I am not judging the Wrexham fans as right or wrong, but all of them seem to have the same opinion on Red Dragons coach Phil Parkinson. The eyesore football we saw during large parts of the second half was downright frustrating.
Plus, that’s when Parkinson is setting this as the norm week in week out with little success to show for. Honestly, the whole point of sitting deep during matches is to earn results and when that doesn’t happen, it becomes a painful watch.
Arguably our best midfielder Lewis O’Brien was also thrown in the deep end, and quickly to injuries.
Fans want Wrexham to sack Phil Parkinson
Once in a while, such a series of poor events can be neglected but after what happened yesterday, many Wrexham fans are turning vocal about Phil Parkinson. Beneath his interview, which the official Wrexham account uploaded on YouTube, a large section of fans called the club to move on from the 58 year old.
One fan didn’t like the Englishman’s post match verdict and commented: “Sack Parkinson if that is his impression of the game.”
Another supporter was quite irritated with Parkinson’s risk-averse approach and added: “Parkie is not letting players play to the best of their ability, and is holding the team back.”
The rest simply resigned on the idea of the Red Dragons chief taking the side up to the Premier League. One fan weighed in: “Parky is not the man to get us there(Premier League), that is the harsh reality.”
A fellow Wrexham faithful also echoed: “Parkinson not championship pedigree” and concluded by saying “get rid of him now”.
Somewhere it feels that the Wrexham fanbase is going harsh on Parkinson for one struggling season after three strong campaigns. However, sentiments have no place in modern day football, neither in the Championship nor the Premier League which is the next milestone on Wrexham’s minds.
Hence, before things start taking an ugly turn and the fans begin to boo Parkinson at the Racecourse, the club should swiftly search for a replacement. A few fixtures until the early weeks of 2026 should be, and likely will be handed to Parky in order to save his dugout seat in North Wales.
Not more than that. Hopefully, he wins the fans’ favour like all these years but if not, then a Wrexham farewell for Parkinson shouldn’t be ruled out.
How are other Championship teams doing after sacking managers?
Multiple Championship outfits have changed managers in the ongoing season and a number of them like Swansea, Southampton and Sheffield United have seen impressive results since then. Coincidentally, Sheffield United are Wrexham’s next opponent, and are currently leading previous year’s League One champions Birmingham 2-0 at the time of writing.
These upwards and onwards weekends could be Wrexham’s regular habit if the board and the Hollywood owners bag a shrewd boss to carry forward Parkinson’s legacy.
The January transfer window is often a perfect time to hire better managers on board. Do that with a couple of budget buys, and who knows, Wrexham can set up a close playoff race with the current top ten teams.
