Wrexham academy graduate Max Cleworth opens up on weird matchday routine

Wrexham academy graduate Max Cleworth has lifted the lid on a weird matchday routine which no Wrexham fan would have expected.

Football as a sport feels incomplete without its stories. In the preceding three years, Wrexham have crawled through three promotions without catching a break which has been a fairytale journey.

Add the Welcome to Wrexham web series to it, and the experience of watching little Wrexham gradually take on the very best in England goes up by ten times. In the process, the Racecourse ground has become quite a passionate atmosphere too, sometimes pouring out more emotions than needed for the game.

On the positive side, Wrexham fans have shared a formidable bond with the Red Dragons stars through thick and thin.

Many of them like Super Paul Mullin have left the building but nobody in the stands will forget his legacy here. I still remember his first hat-trick in Wrexham’s colors which had a little bit of backstory to it.

Actually, a Wrexham fan wished Mullin luck with a bracelet which the club officially acknowledged on social media after the game ended. Likewise, the current crop of players will also be fondly recalled for their fan connections and some notorious habits.

Max Cleworth publicly admits his weird Wrexham routine

Wrexham academy graduate Max Cleworth is worth a shout in this regard, for many reasons. Firstly, he was a youth player who climbed the ladder to the first team ranks and still stars as a usual presence in the Championship lineup.

Secondly, for his recent Wrexham confession which is somewhat weird to be honest. Featuring on That Wrexham Podcast, Cleworth talked about his dressing room and matchday routines at length.

One of those included frequently going to the toilet. In his own words, Cleworth said: “To be fair, I’ve got a few strange match day things, but yeah, the toilet. I’m in there a lot, especially on a match day.”

Well, well, how many of us Wrexham fans saw this revelation coming? Myself, surely not.

Anyways, if this Max Cleworth routine helps him stay rock solid for most days in a Wrexham shirt then there’s no reason for the 23 year old defender to change it.

Phil Parkinson and the players have a massive game coming next up, Sheffield United. When Wrexham bagged a Championship entry more than six months ago, almost every fan took it for granted that each week the team will come up against opposition they hadn’t faced for ages.

When was the last Wrexham vs Sheffield United match?

However, Sheffield United are a different gravy. The Blades have been pitted against the Red Dragons for two FA Cup ties in the past three years.

Not just that, they led to 3 end to end entertaining evenings. If you are wondering how, the answer is one of those Wrexham vs Sheffield United ties literally ended in a 3-3 tie and forced a Cup replay.

Cleworth got a good chunk of minutes across that tie, but standing on the losing end never feels pleasing. That’s why the whole Wrexham squad especially the ones who contested the Sheffield United clashes like Max Cleworth will be aiming for payback at the Racecourse ground.

Individually, Cleworth has gone 22 out of 23 in playing the other Championship opponents and can complete the set on Friday with a likely Blades showing. A strong performance coupled with a clean sheet will be a good way for Wrexham to see off the halfway stage of the league season.

Doing it in front of a Sheffield side piling up goals for fun won’t come easy, that’s for sure. But Max Cleworth and Wrexham don’t mind pulling off an underdog miracle, so, let’s be on our toes for this home weekend.
