The 3 records from Wrexham 5-3 Sheffield United as Phil Parkinson’s Red Dragons defeat the Blades on Boxing Day.
Football night after the Christmas Day is fondly labelled as Boxing Day. Last night, Wrexham and Sheffield United literally turned the Racecourse ground into a Boxing ring.
Usually, five goals in 90 minutes remains the benchmark for measuring games as thrillers. Here, we got eight strikes on display and the sweetest part was that Wrexham emerged winners and that too, by dismantling Chris Wilder’s high flying Blades 5-3.
Honestly, this 5-3 scoreline will go down in Wrexham’s history books as an all-time classic. Further, Kieffer Moore’s two goals to spark a comeback and then send the home fans into loud celebrations will also be cherished for a long long time.
His former coach Chris Wilder wasn’t shy in praising Moore from the rivals camp, and that was proper sportsmanship from him.
Still, taking no credit away from this Boxing Day night, I’ve got to admit it was arguably the 2025/26 Championship game of the season. As many as 3 records were broken on this night, and the last one will fill every Wrexham fan with pride.
3 records Wrexham broke in 5-3 Sheffield United win
1. Most goals in second tier Boxing Day clash
When Wrexham finished the first half being at the losing end of a 3-2 score, many Red Dragons fans may have estimated more goals to arrive on the night. They did, including the 4-3 goal which sent Wrexham into the lead for the first time.
At that stage, I wondered how close Phil Parkinson’s men are to hit any Boxing Day scoring records. Turns out, a further 5 minutes was all it needed to match an eight goal second tier record that had stood without competition for 55 years.
In their own words, OptaJoe noted: “8 – Wrexham’s 5-3 win over Sheffield United is the highest scoring Boxing Day match in the second tier since Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday played out a 4-4 draw in 1970. Banquet.”
2. Wrexham’s first win over Sheffield United since 1979
Sheffield United and Wrexham are currently second division rivals. No matter how long they both take to advance up to the Premier League, both fanbases will admit this game was a match with multiple 2’s on offer.
Patrick Bamford and Kieffer Moore bagged two strikes apiece, Wrexham midfielder George Thomason completed a brace of assists. In a way, Blades centre back Tyler Bindon also contributed to two Wrexham goals, one own goal and a gifted penalty.
Still, the most important “2” was Wrexham’s second overall win against Sheffield United. Being real, the Red Dragons don’t get to play the Blades every now and then but whenever they got the chance, it used to be straight losses for Wrexham since a 4-0 victory in 1979.
46 years on from that day, Wrexham have gotten the better of Sheffield United again. In the 21st century, it’s the first of hopefully many Wrexham wins to come against the Blades.
3. Wrexham’s first 5 goal Championship night
As talked above, this record will hold a special place in the Wrexham fanbase’s hearts. As pointed out by @WrexhamFCFans on X, this 5-3 victory is the inaugural occasion in the Red Dragons second division history where we have dished out 5 goals in the opponent’s net in one game.
Not to lie, but 5 years before Wrexham couldn’t even dream of reaching the Championship level. Now, the club has bagged five goals at this stage which is impressive, to say the least.
With some luck and a good run of form, the Premier League ambitions for Wrexham won’t stay a dream for long.
