4 Wrexham players, Kieffer Moore, Josh Windass, George Thomason and Ben Sheaf have made the Boxing Day Championship Team of the Week.
Playing out the highest scoring game on a particular EFL Championship matchday is an impressive flex for teams. For the Boxing Day weekend, the credit deservingly goes to both Wrexham and Sheffield United for serving an eight goal spectacle.
Well, the Red Dragons scored more than the Blades and obviously outscored every other second tier outfit on Friday night football. Hence, they are well worthy of being hailed as the 23rd Championship matchweek’s best team of the round.
What follows next, fellow Red Dragons fans? Yes, the EFL Championship Team of the Week and there is a simple reason to it.
Football is a team sport and good results are bound to come when a majority of the players drop standout performances on the pitch. Wrexham bagged a solid 5-3 result in the bag that was all down to Phil Parkinson’s men playing some of the best second tier football on the week just gone.
As a result, Wrexham deserved to have the biggest share of representation in the Championship Team of the Week. O’Neills Sports UK and The Lower Tiers have done fair justice to Wrexham with as many as 4 Red Dragons making the best lineup for the 23rd Championship matchday.
4 Wrexham players in Championship Team of the Week
Kieffer Moore
Very often, the Team of the Week nominations in any league consist of players hitting multiple goals in the round. Regarding the 23rd Championship matchday, Wrexham’s Kieffer Moore and the Blades Patrick Bamford were the only ones to score a brace.
Hence, their inclusion was never in question. Rather, a slightly surprising part is that Moore has been deployed on the right while Bamford occupies the centre stage in the middle of the attack.
Considering that the Welshman had the last laugh with the final 5-3 scoreline over Bamford, not giving Moore the central striker role is a little bit harsh.
Nathan Broadhead
With Broadhead, watching Wrexham’s left flank create big chances one after the other feels like a breath of fresh air. Hopefully, Phil Parkinson is not in an experimenting mood again just like the Team of the Week makers.
From the outside, Wrexham fans are well within rights to argue that Josh Windass impacted the Blades victory no less than Broadhead did. They aren’t wrong here, however the 5-3 penalty goal was Windass only direct goal contribution.
Sure, Windass had a hand on the first own goal but Team of the Week ratings give less preference to penalties and forcing own goals in front of direct assists. Further, picking all of Moore, Broadhead and Windass will have been unfair on Bamford.
Hence, it’s a good call overall to stick with Broadhead instead of Windass.
George Thomason
Ballon d’Or nominees across European football have a bunch of Team of the Week nominations to their name. Serving up three assists, and a penalty on Wrexham’s plate speaks why Josh Windass advocated George Thomason for the Ballon d’Or.
Hence, Thomason starring in the Team of the Week as a left wing back is a proper no-brainer call.
Ben Sheaf
Wrexham’s wide attackers pocketed huge applauses after thumping past Sheffield United with a 5-3 win. One man who again went under the radar, as usual, was Ben Sheaf.
Sheaf didn’t provide the final assist on any of the goals but his linkup play with George Thomason and possession winning actions definitely made a big difference. Thanks to Sheaf, Wrexham could afford to attack in numbers during the second half when the game was well in balance at 3-3.
This midfield recognition properly sums up Sheaf’s efforts in Wrexham’s winning cause. As Red Dragons fans, we hope to see a similar top-tier shift from Sheaf and the other players vs Preston North End.
