Sheffield United boss respects Wrexham with shirt claim despite 5-3 defeat

Chris Wilder respects Wrexham with shirt claim

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder respects Wrexham with his shirt claim a week after his Blades side fell to a 5-3 defeat at the Racecourse.

Feels like yesterday, but it’s already been a week since the goal carnage between Wrexham & Sheffield caught up at 5-3 at the STōK Racecourse. Clearly, the best game between these 2 sides in a while, and maybe the most memorable one from the Dragons’ perspective.

But besides that early Bamford brace, Wrexham’s comeback or possibly every screamer that featured there, a story prevailed beyond the heated rivalry between these sides.

Respect, mutual appreciation and nothing else.

Notably, while the game presented a treat to every fan present, it posed a threat to Sheffield boss Wilder’s relations with Wrexham.

Having shared dressing rooms with boss Parky & previously managed Kieffer Moore, the evening wouldn’t come easily for Wilder. But did he lose his temper, present a harsh version of himself? Not at all.

Something that’s pretty rare from an opposition boss after succumbing to a comeback defeat to the “Disney FC”. Wrexham fans who’ve listened to PNE boss Paul Heckingbottom after the recent defeat would definitely relate.

Instead of creating a fuss over the defeat, Chris Wilder appreciated his former striker Kieff, acknowledged his side’s shortcomings and left. Pure class from the only Sheffield entity, every Wrexham fan ought to respect.

Wilder follows his class with post-game Wrexham act

Pinpointedly, it’s 8 days and counting since the full-time whistle blew between Wrexham & Sheffield United. That’s enough tenure for anyone to move ahead, let alone the Blades gaffer who ended up on the losing side.

But maybe that’s what distinguishes managers like Chris Wilder from his other contemporaries in the job. The 58-year-old has put out a dedicated Wrexham shirt in Sheffield’s dressing room to motivate his players around.

Speaking to SUTV, as quoted by The Bladesman, Wilder explained the move saying: “It’s a reminder to the players that this is what happens if we’re off of it… And Wrexham the goals we conceded were just ridiculous, timings as well and we gave the opposition an opportunity to hurt us and if we do that they will hurt us… It’s a reminder to them, that West Brom and Wrexham shirt are up and I don’t want to see another shirt for a long long time.”

Some may argue that’s definitely not the most respect-oriented jersey showcase of all time. Still, you have to appreciate Wilder as well as Wrexham to establish an identity in Sheffield’s dressing room, apart from the Blades and the fans’ minds.

Is Wilder’s message a respectful threat for return fixture?

I know this piece, casually transversing from Wilder’s respectful gesture to a “threatening message”, reads fast. But that’s minding that silent leaders, expensive flops & friendly rivalries are recognised terminologies in Championship football.

Back to the point, the speculation originates from Sheffield’s near-impossible overturn since Wilder’s return. The 58-year-old has done the magic at Blades again, as they rank the most in-form side spanning the last 10 matchdays.

Despite a 3-5 result against Wrexham & a defeat to West Brom, Wilder’s men have racked up 22 points in the last 10 games. Mind you, that’s when Wrexham’s best form of an ongoing 3/3 run has them 6 points trailing behind the Blades in this tally.

Currently, Chris Wilder & side are in red-hot form, and his no more shirt claim is something every Wrexham fan must beware of.

Having a return tie scheduled nearly 3 months after the Boxing Day game, Wilder would be desperate to settle the score with his ally Phil Parkinson. As of now, Wrexham is contesting as a bigger promotion favourite, but should Wilder continue like this, the tide can overturn by the time March arrives.

This buildup effectively anticipates the fans to gear up for an interesting faceoff when Wrexham & Chris Wilder battle again. Fans would hope for the Dragons win, but they should not fall out of respect if the Blades take away the win this time.
