3 clubs Red Dragons hero Paul Mullin shouldn’t say NO for leaving Wrexham, provided that a January offer arrives.
The word on Wrexham hero Paul Mullin’s current status is out. Throughout the recent Christmas Eve, there were whispers of Mullin parting ways with loan club Wigan Athletic which felt like a baseless rumour at first.
Even now, it’s baffling to think that Wigan opted to move on from Mullin within six months, when he was a firm favourite for finishing their 2025/26 season’s top scorer. Anyways, there’s no time to cry or feel sorry for our Super Paul Mullin, as the Wrexham fanbase calls him in North Wales.
As quoted by the BBC, Wrexham gaffer Phil Parkinson relayed this bemusing Mullin update saying: “Mulls’ loan spell has been terminated.”
Wrexham can fulfill Paul Mullin’s Championship wish right now
I know, there will be a fair few Wrexham nostalgia merchants like me who will wish to see Paul Mullin in the Championship just to give him a proper send-off. He deserves a heartwarming goodbye from the fans as much as the other Dragons legends.
Also, don’t forget, Mullin had a one-game Championship wish that can be fulfilled right now. If boss Parkinson fulfills that dream, the striker’s story as a Red will reach it’s fitting conclusion.
If not, then also Mullin’s Wrexham legacy will be celebrated. Both ways, it’s evident the 31 year old has more than a foot outside the Wrexham exit door and him seeking a fresh challenge in January is a strong possibility.
3 clubs Paul Mullin shouldn’t say NO for leaving Wrexham
On this note, below are 3 clubs that are tempting enough for Paul Mullin to leave Wrexham, provided these January offers arrive for him.
Swindon Town
Currently sitting in League Two, Swindon Town are waging a direct promotion challenge for the third tier at the moment. The vast majority of Paul Mullin’s Wrexham strikes arrived in non league football and League Two, hence, going back to that level will be a good fit for him.
Swindon Town will benefit from Mullin’s rich promotion pedigree, and the surprising part is that Mulls has lined up for the Robins before. Previously, the Englishman starred there with 9 goals for Swindon but they couldn’t grab hold of a playoff spot back then.
Thus, there is a collectively unfinished League Two business for both Mullin and Swindon. His old Wrexham mate Ollie Palmer is also running Swindon’s promotion ship this season, meaning a club return can become a happy homecoming for Mullin by the end of May.
Hopefully, Swindon seizes this opportunity and rings Paul Mullin back for a reunion.
Huddersfield Town
Huddersfield Town is another of Paul Mullin’s former clubs and most notably, his boyhood club. Coincidentally, they are also caught up in promotion wishes of their own, however, the Terriers can only reasonably think of playoffs as a pathway to step up to the Championship.
Emotionally, Mullin could be swayed by Huddersfield Town’s appeal who were only one game from heading to the Premier League just over three years back. Since then, Huddersfield has gone on a downwards spiral as a fallen giant in the English football pyramid.
Taking them back to the second tier will be a demanding feat. As for Mullin, he has improved his League One performances this time around, and it’s valid to assume the forward will be more than keen to remove any doubts that lie about his third division abilities.
Sheffield Wednesday
For the third one, we have Championship strugglers Sheffield Wednesday. Hear me out, I’m not saying that Paul Mullin can walk into the Owls lineup and row themselves out of the relegation danger looming at present.
Being reasonable, the biggest aim for Wednesday will be to conclude this horrible season with a net positive points total, or even with 0 points. They have had enough problems signing players which has directly plagued their squad’s quality, this is where Paul Mullin can step in.
Should Wrexham allow Mulls to head on a simple loan deal, the Owls can then have more experienced bodies up front to better their points tally.
How can Mullin benefit then? Well, we touched on his one-game Championship wish above and if the Red Dragons don’t show their willingness for fulfilling this wish, then Sheffield Wednesday remains Mullin’s biggest hope at this stage.
Let’s stay optimistic, that one of these 3 clubs does tempt Paul Mullin with a January escape route so that, the ex-Wrexham hero gets to enjoy a fruitful end to this current season.
