Wales hero Iwan Roberts suggests the club to make a move for in-demand Championship striker, Josh Sargent.
Listening to George Elek’s latest Wrexham claim, the Dragons perfectly match the description of sleepwalkers who just woke up in time. Touted far from the promotion race a month ago, Wrexham now stand just a point away from the playoff spots.
Such a massive turnaround within weeks feels surreal. Surprisingly, Wrexham feels in contention to put on another similar show for the fans who’ve been enjoying every bit of the Disney fairytale recently.
So far, Wrexham’s January transfer window has been all waiting and no signings. Still, the patience of a fortnight can yield them one of the most dramatic transfers in the Championship ever.
Within the last few days, Wrexham got to know of Norwich striker Josh Sargent’s transfer status. With the player handing in a departure request, his availability for the upcoming Wrexham matchday felt nearly ruled out.

While Sargent’s availability remains in doubt even now, his transfer route is still undecided. Though initially heading towards the MLS for Toronto FC, the 25-year-old could end up at the Racecourse now.
That’s according to former Wales hero Iwan Roberts, as he urges the Dragons to deploy Sargent’s transfer desire for their benefit. As quoted by Wales Online, Roberts wants Wrexham to make a move for the 25-year-old, saying: “I think it would be a really good addition, because he’s a good player. He’s good with his back to goal and he can score goals.”
Josh Sargent can be a massive Wrexham hit
Previously reported to plan a secret £14m move for top European striker, Wrexham’s ambitions of reinforcing their attack have been ever evident. While Sargent need not necessarily be him, his profile in a comparable transfer fee is an attractive one.
Having had considerable Top Flight experience, Sargent can be a Kieffer Moore-like investment as Wrexham prepare for the Premier League level.
Undeniably, both Moore and Sargent are too good at the Championship level and ought to be playing in the English top tier. That not just makes the duo one to watch for, but if they succeed, they can carve out serious success for Wrexham.

Even if it doesn’t work, big Kieff’s already 33 and is not ageing back anytime soon. From that perspective, Josh Sargent can be one for the now and future.
Sharing strong aerial abilities like Moore, while having an all-around profile, Sargent is an ideal pick for Wrexham. Be it a 3-5-2 with Moore, or in a sole role in a 3-4-3, he can complement the overall attack while building from the deep.
Additionally, just like Moore, Sargent is a full-time international, showcasing his stature at the national level. All these likenesses hint at Sargent’s success if Wrexham decide to pursue a move for him.
The only possible downside with Josh Sargent
While all the abovementioned advantages hold, there’s a potential flipside that Wrexham must consider before finalising Josh Sargent.
Iwan Roberts put it bluntly before Wrexham, saying: “I think that [not starting] would be a big issue for Sargent. He wants to be starting every game from now until the end of the season because of the World Cup in his home country.”
Now, that’s something Wrexham would need to clearly think about before promising. Already employing multiple attacking options in Moore, Sam Smith, Josh Windass and Rathbone, guaranteeing game-time for Sargent would be near-impossible.
One way could be offloading a proven option this winter to create space for Sargent. While there remains little pessimism about the USMNT striker making the most of it, it remains to be seen if Wrexham accept this route.
Overall, Wrexham have a jackpot opportunity in hand with the chance to sign Josh Sargent. Even though the club may not be able to present him before his former side, Norwich, Sargent’s move can be a statement for the Championship.
