Paul Mullin handed League One transfer route to linkup with Wrexham strike partner

Paul Mullin

Bolton Wanderers showcase interest in signing Paul Mullin until the remainder of the season for their promotion charge.

A possible win over Norwich ought to take Wrexham’s tally to six wins in what has been a memorable 3 weeks for fans. Still, whatever the impeccable on-field success may led to, a fraction of the Wrexham faithful still feels stuck in the friendly against Liverpool U21s.

Having been denied the chance of witnessing Paul Mullin in a Wrexham shirt again, the closed-doors game spoiled the fans’ mood. The fact that Super Mulls went goalless just added to his transfer fears further.

Though boss Phil Parkinson labelled the friendly appearance as a match practice for Mullin, his future at Wrexham stood pre-decided. What the game against Liverpool U21s did was confirm the need for a lower-tier move for him again.

Given Mullin’s track record, the striker’s authority is stamped in League Two and below. However, his recent spells have shown promise to League One clubs, as a promotion contender has come asking for his move.

As per Football League World, it’s Bolton Wanderers who are interested in Super Mulls to amplify their promotion hopes. With boss Steven Schumacher dreaming of an attack force that includes Mullin, the out-of-favour Wrexham star could be off for another spell.

Mullin handed hopes to reunite with Sam Dalby

Given Wrexham’s rapid upsurge in the English division, it’s no surprise that a lot of former Dragons kick out in similar or lower tiers. Sam Dalby is one of them, with the 26-year-old faring out at Bolton currently.

Despite having spent a fair share of his Wrexham time as a backup to other strikers, Dalby remains a consecutive promotion winner for the record. This time, he has an opportunity to add another one to his name with Mullin tipped to join in Bolton’s promotion drive.

Not to forget, Paul Mullin had been the driving factor in Dalby’s best Wrexham years. While the latter’s efforts as a super-sub remain well documented, Mullin almost single-handedly forced Wrexham’s way from the lower tiers to League One.

However, though this fancies the idea of Mullin joining in with Dalby, there’s a downside too. With Dalby still fighting his way for a starting role, it remains uncertain where Super Mulls can lie in Bolton’s pecking order.

That’s especially considering his League One numbers, which feel marginal compared to his lower-tier spells. Again, the dreaded run of Bolton strikers can help, but it’s challenging to predict if Mullin and Dalby can replicate that starter and super-sub symbiosis here.

Paul Mullin tipped to write revenge script on Wigan?

Apart from a potential Sam Dalby reunion, the biggest factor to motivate Mullin to join Bolton is the idea of avenging Wigan Athletic. With his former employers struggling mid-table, Super Mulls can make a statement if he goes up with Bolton.

Interestingly, if this Bolton Wanderers interest popped up some days earlier, Paul Mullin might’ve had a direct face-off with Wigan. Still, Mullin can enjoy a win for Bolton over the club that snubbed him abritarily.

To note, Paul Mullin was running toe-for-toe with Wigan’s top scorer this season, having 5 goals to his name despite a reduced role. Probably, Wigan still owe an explanation for moving ahead of Mullin, as such numbers would be any other club’s dream.

Still, Paul Mullin’s Wigan Athletic chapter is closed for good. Hopefully, Bolton Wanderers and Steven Schumacher value his worth much more if they decide to finalise a January transfer for him soon.
