Wrexham Captain James McClean plans a permanent January homecoming to childhood club, Derry City.
Catching a break from the peaceful and bland transfer days, it’s been a whirlwind 24 hours at the Racecourse. One that has seen the general notion shift from joyous to surprised and eventually emotional.
While it began well with Max Cleworth’s contract extension news, the celebrations of his signing turned pale with the Norwich defeat. As if getting outplayed by a relegation-battling side wasn’t enough, Wrexham fans have been left emotional with the latest James McClean update.
Though the Wrexham faithful have long demanded a spicy January window, seeing McClean leave was probably not on their cards. Still, all they have now is another 48 hours until McClean’s exit is confirmed.
Recently, Daniel McDonnell updated about McClean’s future, saying: “James McClean is finalising a return to Derry City this weekend after reaching agreement with Wrexham that will allow him to return home on a permanent basis in this window. Confirmation expected in next 48 hours”
As things stand, Captain James McClean will be the first one to head out of Wrexham’s exit door. Probably, his last serving as the leader before he joins his boyhood club, Derry City, again.
James McClean’s Wrexham career
McClean’s time at the Racecourse has been everything a professional footballer could long for. A spell marked with goals, trophies, and innumerable support from the fans, James McClean is leaving as a Wrexham legend.
In his 108 club appearances, McClean recorded 8 goals, 23 assists and 29 yellow cards. The last metric of bookings demonstrates the passion with which he represented the Wrexham badge.
A fan-favourite for Wrexham and a nightmare for away fans, James McClean’s time at the club has proven this spirit time and again. Still, there’s an unshown aspect of his out-and-loud character after he wouldn’t celebrate a winning assist for Wrexham against his former club, Wigan Athletic.

That doesn’t overpower the countless incidents where McClean has lived and breathed Wrexham. Be it leading by example or defending his teammates, the Irishman demonstrated responsibility in the same way as during trophy celebrations.
Arguably, the 36-year-old could have wished for a better ending to his Wrexham time as his last kick came in a penalty miss. Still, for the teamman he has been, McClean wouldn’t mind it as long as his side finished the task by causing a once-in-a-lifetime Cupset over Nottingham.
McClean heads Derry for an emotional homecoming
Seeing limited game-time while being the Captain, a decision on McClean’s Wrexham future felt impending. The latest development simply accelerates his departure, which would’ve been imminent in the summer otherwise.
Well, what better way to wrap up a memorable career? Given that McClean is heading back to his hometown club, Derry City.
Notably, Derry was among the first clubs where McClean began his professional career in full swing. Over 14 years later, the Irishman plans a re-move to sum up the footballing spell that saw him lining up for multiple Premier League sides and ambitious clubs like Wrexham.
Without a doubt, James McClean’s return to Derry would be wholeheartedly welcomed by his local fans and family. Very likely, a spell of a couple of years could see the celebrated Irish International hung up his boots where it all began for him.
On the other hand, McClean’s departure forces Wrexham to announce its new Captain. While several eligible leaders are options to choose from, the Red Dragons could be sticking with Dom Hyam, who’s been handling the standing Captain duties for some time now.
Overall, James McClean’s exit brings the end of an era at Wrexham. Tightly grasping all these memories, Dragon fans would hope the upcoming future to be even better, which leads them to their PL ambition.
