Wrexham fans will be left gutted to see a disappointing transfer update regarding club hero Elliot Lee.
Wrexham have lost fan favourite James McClean in this January transfer window. From the midfield’s point of view, McClean’s absence won’t be felt as a bigger lineup void, all thanks to George Thomason and Liberato Cacace performing attacking duties well.
However, McClean’s departure reminds a harsh truth to Wrexham fans. Despite there being only twelve days left in the winter market, a few club legends can still head out of the exit door which is always an emotional sight to behold.
Nowadays, the home support at the Racecourse are busy keeping themselves updated over Paul Mullin’s exit rumours. After all, the Wrexham crowd didn’t get to offer him a proper farewell before leaving on loan, just as they were left in the dark over McClean heading back to Derry City.
Elliot Lee nearly followed James McClean in leaving Wrexham
In the meanwhile, another club hero Elliot Lee nearly followed James McClean out of the Wrexham exit door. As quoted by the Leader Live, Parkinson delivered this shocking transfer update saying: “There was a club which was very close to agreeing a deal and they’ve gone elsewhere for a different profile of player, but I’m sure there’ll be other clubs looking at Elliot.”

Clearly, the squad trimming activity is going in full flow at Wrexham. With McClean bidding bye, fans may have anticipated Elliot Lee bagging that vacant spot in the 25-man Reds list. Ultimately, Lee used to feature in that list as recently as December, so it wasn’t a vague possibility of him staying put for the time being.
But with Parkinson lamenting Lee’s near-missed transfer, it’s crystal clear to conclude that the 31 year old will seek a fresh challenge in the coming days no matter what. Most likely, his transfer confirmation will arrive beyond the full-time whistle against Leicester City at home.
Will Elliot Lee make a club return like James McClean?
Coming to the big question, which club will Lee prefer as his next destination? Will the attacking midfielder also follow suit in James McClean’s decision to return back to an old club? It’s quite possible, and below are 2 clubs where Lee can mark a club return this January.
Luton Town
Starting off with the very club Elliot Lee left to join Wrexham 4 years back. Every Reds fan knows that Lee’s best scoring numbers have arrived playing for Phil Parkinson’s men. The second-best scoring numbers Lee every bagged was at Luton Town itself.

With 30 goals, Lee’s five year stay at Luton Town was fairly decent that included a couple of loan exits as well. At the age of 31, Lee can still come of great use to the Hatters in League One. As a matter of coincidence, Lee has won two promotions in the last two seasons while Luton has fallen from Premier League grace to now sitting in the third tier.
Can Lee be the missing lucky charm Luton needs at the moment, let’s see.
Blackpool
As opposed to Luton Town, Blackpool are in a different League One fight this season. They are merely 3 points adrift of the relegation zone, with a lack of goals touted as the biggest reason behind their struggles.
Unlike at Luton Town, Elliot Lee made only a handful of appearances for Blackpool ten years ago. However, the prospect of signing a player who used to score goals for fun in the third tier just 7-8 months ago can tempt Blackpool into resigning Lee for a second spell at the club.
