‘Expected’ – Wrexham chasing the signature of 26-year-old former PL fullback

Wrexham

Wrexham are chasing the signature of 26-year-old former PL fullback Yan Valery in the January transfer window.

A Wrexham transfer window without talks of a massive striker signing just doesn’t exist in reality. Since yesterday, the entire Reds fanbase is caught up with £19m Sidiki Cherif transfer rumours with most expressing their displeasure rather than excitement.

After all, £19m is no small amount in the second-tier. As many as 2-3 top signings could be made with that figure from a promotion-challenging team’s point of view. Plus, is a new striker the urgent requirement for Wrexham at this stage?

The simple answer is No. The Wrexham backline is crying for more competition on the right wing back spot ever since the January window arrived, but progress has been made at snail’s pace so far. Earlier, Hampus Skoglund was touted as a decent right back alternative to Issa Kabore but his rumours have gone cold for weeks.

Wrexham eye January move for Yan Valery

There is a new right back link for Wrexham in the rumour mill, though. In their own words, a report from The Star read: “The Star understands versatile senior man Yan Valery is another player with serious interest from elsewhere and can reveal that Rangers and Wrexham are among the clubs expected to make bids before the window is out.”

Now, the Ibrox outfit and Wrexham have already stole headlines for Josh Windass transfer rumours in the early days of the January transfer window. Considering that Windass to Rangers is now off, it’s evident both Rangers and Wrexham won’t be on good terms with each other.

That makes this Yan Valery signing battle even more interesting. Coming to the best part, Yan Valery’s Premier League experience is quite tempting for the Reds to go all out for his signature.

Yan Valery’s Premier League career

Despite being only 26 years old, Yan Valery’s Premier League career began all the way back in 2018. He was playing for Southampton back then, where he also made his giant leap from the Saints academy to the first team.

Valery’s Premier League debut came up against Manchester United which is considered a dream debut for any rising teenagers. The defender played the whole 90 minutes which led to Valery having a breakthrough Premier League season in 2018/19.

In the reverse Manchester United fixture, Valery even scored a sensational 1-0 goal. Overall, he has 43 Premier League appearances to his name and at 26 years old, there might be a lot to come from him provided he gets a brilliant opportunity to shine.

Yan Valery to Wrexham can be a win-win transfer

Wrexham are only a few steps away from the Premier League, and bagging players like Valery with a healthy top-flight pedigree will be a good step for the future. Plus, prying him away from Sheffield Wednesday’s hands shouldn’t be a big task especially when the Owls are muddled in their financial crisis.

Phil Parkinson’s men prized away Josh Windass from Wednesday not long ago, without paying any transfer fees. Six months have passed since then, the Owls will surely be better off than having players leave for free. Yet, they most likely won’t have much say if Wrexham offer a couple million pounds for taking away Yan Valery to North Wales.

Valery will get a chance to compete with Issa Kabore as a natural wingback. This way, the club can also opt against signing Kabore permanently should his parent club Manchester City demand an eye-watering fee in the summer.

Valery, Longman and a budget right back will then provide Parkinson with a good catalogue of fullback and wide midfielder choices down the right hand side.

Honestly, getting Valery before the 2nd February deadline should be a bigger priority for Wrexham rather than Sidiki Cherif. Still, let’s see how the Red Dragons higher-ups act on this situation.
