Phil Parkinson drops unexpected Wrexham transfer plot twist about January player exits, which no fan saw coming.
Since the 3-2 comeback win against QPR, Andy Cannon and Conor Coady have bid goodbye to Wrexham’s promotion chasing group for this season. The duo had become fringe names as the 2025/26 season progressed, and the best way out for them was to seek a move away from the Racecourse.
Even after that, Wrexham have got a bucket load of under-utilised first team talent at hand. About 16-18 senior players are regularly involved in the Reds Championship matches. The rest are just there to make up numbers in case a massive Wrexham injury crisis occurs, or if the team’s form goes downhill.
Neither of them seems to be on the cards until May, hence, Wrexham’s priority should be to resolve the futures of those players. There are still 5 days to go into the winter transfer market deadline day. A handful of loans or free transfers exits can be worked out, but Wrexham aren’t looking at a mass clearance unlike what the Reds fanbase had been expecting all along.
Phil Parkinson drops Wrexham transfer plot twist
Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has hinted at a slight change in the club’s January transfer plan. In his own words, the Leader Live quoted Parkinson saying: “There’s been other inquiries for our players and some we’re not prepared to let go, others we are. We’re balancing everything at the moment between what we need to do.”

In simple terms, Wrexham are probably not getting desired loan offers for players they wished to move on this month. Or, the majority of transfer offers keep coming for those players whom the Reds still insist on backing.
Remember, the Ollie Rathbone case when the summer transfer window slammed shut? He was initially left out of the then-24 man Wrexham squad with a faint hope that the 29-year-old playmaker might win back Parkinson’s faith on the back of a Wrexham Player of the Year winning season.
Fortunately for the Reds, the same happened and Rathbone has now become an integral asset of the current side that has gathered 6 wins across all competitions in the last 8 matches. Wrexham aren’t dismissing the likelihood of another Ollie Rathbone repeat in the immediate future. Here, fans can’t call them out for being hopeful.
Which players can Wrexham retain ahead of transfer deadline day?
So, what’s next for Wrexham as the January transfer window winds up. Which players should the club think twice about retaining ahead of the 2nd February transfer deadline day?
Currently, the club has 23 first team members following squad members James McClean and Conor Coady’s departures. Evidently, two places are up for grabs where many Wrexham fans will pick Paul Mullin and Elliot Lee out of sheer nostalgia.

Logically, it would be better to add a new right wing back to provide more defensive solidity and competition on the wings. Sheffield Wednesday’s Yan Valery fits the bill as a budget alternative, and the final roster spot should go to a centre back.
Nowadays, multiple Wrexham transfer rumours are centred on buying new strikers but they aren’t the pressing need of the hour. Kieffer Moore and Sam Smith have to fight for first-team minutes at the moment, while backline members like Max Cleworth and Dominic Hyam barely get any rest irrespective of the schedule.
A short-term injury to either of them can weaken Wrexham’s grip on a top 6 spot where the Reds lead seventh-placed Bristol City by only 1 point. A talented centre-back like Callum Doyle on a loan deal will do the trick for Wrexham without spending millions of transfer fees upfront.
