Wrexham’s transfer ambitions to bring in an attacking recruit take a blow with Sidiki Cherif’s injury & Adam Armstrong’s Boro update.
Unlike the initial speculations about Wrexham’s January plans, the Reds’ transfer hunt has been highly singular. While the club has assessed multiple profiles, their longing has been attached to just a centre-forward.
So far, Wrexham’s rabbit hole search has narrowed the choice between two names. They go by Sidiki Cherif or Adam Armstrong, with the Reds bound to break their transfer record if they finalise either one.
A choice between a long-term option like Cherif and a quick impact signing in Adam Armstrong is never easier. Factor in their near-similar but hefty transfer valuations, and the choice becomes even more complicated for Wrexham.
In the best-case scenario, Wrexham could be lining up simultaneous moves for both Armstrong and Sidiki Cherif. The reality is far more different, with the Reds likely in for a disappointing end to their striking pursuit.
Wrexham’s striking ambitions take a hit with Cherif’s knock
In boss Phil Parkinson’s visit to scout Sidiki Cherif, the teenager had taken a hard knock on his ankle. Not only did it affect his initial impression of Parky & Wrexham with a disappointing show, but Cherif had to be subbed off at the hour mark in discomfort.
Given a week-long break until the next Ligue 1 clash, the expectation was for Cherif to return to action. However, the knock proved worse than the surface assessment as Cherif was nowhere to be seen in training yesterday.
Incroyable SCO confirmed the 19-year-old’s absence, quoting: “Injured in the ankle during #PFCSCO, Sidiki Chérif did not take part in the team training session with Angers SCO this afternoon.”

Having opted out of the training session ahead of the buildup for the Metz game, Cherif’s participation lies in jeopardy. Factor this in with the limited time left until Angers hosts Metz, and Cherif being reduced to the sidelines can be a real possibility.
Likely, Sidiki Cherif’s last chance to win over Wrexham’s management may already be over. While a short cameo from Cherif isn’t ruled out, it remains uncertain if it can convince Wrexham for a last-minute deadline move.
Adam Armstrong’s update further worries Wrexham
Wrexham’s transfer stance has always seen Adam Armstrong as their plan B to Sidiki Cherif. Serving as his backup rumour, the Saints target-man has barely captured the Reds’ complete transfer attention.
As things stand, the Adam Armstrong to Wrexham rumour doesn’t feel like improving. While it was for situations like the current Sidiki Cherif knock that Wrexham had Armstrong as a backup, the Reds are likely to miss upon his transfer as well.
As per reports, Adam Armstrong is in talks of a Middlesbrough move. Saints Extra confirmed the update, quoting: “Middlesbrough are in talks with Southampton over a move for Adam Armstrong, with the player keen on a return to the north-east — a package in the region of £10m is thought to be under discussion”
The recent update on Armstrong’s deal comes as a double-edged sword for Wrexham. While Boro can sign the Championship star for a discounted price, losing Armstrong’s deal to Boro makes it consecutive transfer defeats for Wrexham this January.
Not to forget, Wrexham have already lost Jeremy Sarmiento’s transfer battle to Middlesbrough. Should Armstrong’s deal go through, Wrexham would be on the losing end of another deal to a promotion favourite.
Will Wrexham fight back for Armstrong’s transfer? We’ll see, but as of now, Armstrong is closer to donning Boro colours than representing Wrexham’s Red.
