Predicted Wrexham lineup vs Sheffield Wednesday: Former Owls star to start?

Predicted Wrexham lineup

Predicted Wrexham lineup vs Sheffield Wednesday for the 29th Championship matchday. Will former Owls star Josh Windass start for Wrexham tonight?

The final Championship matchday of January has arrived. Wrexham are set to lock horns with rock-bottom sitting Sheffield Wednesday in away territory. The Reds have enjoyed a brilliant January so far, while the Owls are navigating a similar month as they have had all season.

Not just 17 places, but a massive 51 points separate Wrexham and Sheffield Wednesday. This stat is enough to know how much hardships the home side have witnessed already. Despite having the home support, it’s Sheffield Wednesday who have nothing to lose and everything to gain should they slash some points in their favour tonight.

For Phil Parkinson’s men, today’s game is hands down the most easiest Championship task they have until May. A win is the bare minimum expectation from tonight, while also ensuring fresh legs throughout the squad. As such, lineup changes are bound to happen and below is the predicted Wrexham lineup Parkinson can start against Sheffield Wednesday.

Predicted Wrexham lineup vs Sheffield Wednesday

GK: Arthur Okonkwo

Danny Ward could have been in contention here, had he returned slightly earlier from his long-term injury. Still, Arthur Okonkwo is fine and fit, so, should have no problems keeping the Owls attacks at bay.

CB: Callum Doyle

A week’s rest will have helped Callum Doyle’s match fitness well. Moreover, tonight’s game can be virtually written off as a Wrexham win, barring any surprises. Hence, players like Doyle should be started to help fetch a clean sheet before being subbed when the game is well in control.

CB: Dominic Hyam

Dominic Hyam deserves a rest here and there, and Zak Vyner joining the team will serve that purpose. But for now, the 30-year-old Wrexham captain should be slotted in the lineup to avoid any defensive lapses.

CB: Max Cleworth

Dan Scarr will obviously get a significant playing time today. But Cleworth should be paired with Doyle and Hyam at back, afterwards, Parkinson can manage every centre-back’s minutes.

LWB: Liberato Cacace

The alternate switch between George Thomason and Liberato Cacace has become a pattern for quite some weeks now. Going by that trend, today should be Cacace’s time to assume wingback duties on the left side of the pitch.

CM: Lewis O’Brien

The February fixture list is action packed with blockbuster showdowns against Ipswich Town and Bristol City. Key Wrexham players like Matty James will be needed in those days, hence, trusting Lewis O’Brien for the Owls visit won’t be a bad idea.

CM: George Dobson

On similar lines, Ben Sheaf has clocked more minutes as the Wrexham pivot instead of George Dobson. Bringing on Dobson in the playing eleven will thus be fair on Parkinson’s part.

RWB: Ryan Longman

At QPR, the Reds went with no recognised wingers up front. Issa Kabore also didn’t got much creative space and instead had to help nullify the many attacking questions QPR posed.

At Hillsborough, the scenario would be different. Wrexham will get to see more of the ball and deploying Ryan Longman on the right flank can boost chances of getting a couple of early goals that can decide the evening.

CAM: Josh Windass

Josh Windass was absent during the reverse fixture draw at the Racecourse. A hamstring injury denied him a first Sheffield Wednesday reunion since leaving, however, better luck can be in store for Windass tonight.

The 32-year-old made headlines against QPR by powering Wrexham’s late 3-2 comeback. Rewarding him with a start against his former club is completely fair, with Nathan Broadhead bagging a suitable rest this time out.

CAM: Ollie Rathbone

Ollie Rathbone came on for the final fifteen minutes last Saturday and did his job with a glorious 3-2 strike. Naturally, both Rathbone and Windass are attacking midfielders and both deserve a start tonight.

So, why not deploy them both behind the striker?

ST: Kieffer Moore

It’s strange, but Kieffer Moore has surpassed a full month without scoring a Wrexham goal. There are multiple striker rumours doing the rounds recently, which can affect Moore’s starting status if his goals don’t come quickly.

Knowing that, it would be wise if Parkinson gave Moore another start in a row to help him revive his earlier scoring confidence. Will Moore bag a brace just like he did vs Sheffield Wednesday in August, let’s see.
