‘Cometh the hour’ – Wrexham fans make stunning Sam Smith claim after 1-0 win

Sam Smith

Wrexham fans make stunning Sam Smith starting claims over Kieffer Moore after the 1-0 Sheffield Wednesday win.

For a day, Wrexham sat outside of the Championship top 6 all down to Derby County humiliating Bristol City with a 5-0 away win. The Reds still had a game in hand, and they have made it count by getting the better of lowly lying Sheffield Wednesday.

Wrexham fans will agree that the scoreline should have been massive, somewhere near the 5-0 pre-game predictions. Full credit to the Owls though, for resisting Phil Parkinson’s men until around the hour mark. Only then, the visitors got a real opening and Sam Smith did what he does best.

Sam Smith’s January 2026 stats

With that 1-0 tap-in, Smith moved to his 4th Championship goal in January. And the best part? All four of those Sam Smith goals have arrived in the striker’s four consecutive starts for Wrexham. Hands down, the 27-year-old has been on a roll this month.

Players like Ollie Rathbone and Nathan Broadhead have also enjoyed a stellar start to 2026 but Smith is the most deserving candidate for Wrexham’s January player of the month. As a matter of coincidence, Smith’s Sheffield Wednesday goal came exactly a year after he joined the Reds ship led by boss Phil Parkinson.

One year ago, hardly any Wrexham fan will have thought how crucial Smith will be to the attacking unit beyond League One. Now, the same fanbase isn’t shying away from giving Smith his due recognition.

Wrexham fans make stunning Sam Smith claim after 1-0 win

As usual, Wrexham fans are praising Smith for his superb scoring run. In doing so, many fans have made a stunning claim about him leading the line for Wrexham on starting basis.

One fan summed up: “Personally I think Sam should be starting ahead of moore imo, he’s brought the goals of Late, or least give him more mins as a sub, we won today because Cometh the hour – SAM WAS THE MAN”

Alongside that, Sam Smith’s goals have always followed an interesting pattern in January. He fired Wrexham into the lead against Blackburn Rovers, Derby County and now Sheffield Wednesday which were all tricky away games.

His other strike was a vital 1-1 leveller against Norwich City at home, that shows Smith is the man for big moments. Another fan shed light on Smith’s chemistry with Issa Kabore down the right flank. He said: “Smith and Kaboré need to be out there together for all 90 every match.”

More fans echoed the same sentiments for Smith, with a third one saying: “He chases down everything, with results. So glad he started.”

Should Wrexham start Sam Smith over Kieffer Moore?

In light of so many Sam Smith starting claims, should Wrexham view him as the first-choice striker ahead of Kieffer Moore? After all, Smith is going through a red-hot scoring form while Moore has gone cold in recent times.

Firstly, nobody can deny Moore’s role in getting Wrexham upto speed in the early months of the Championship. Him and Josh Windass used to carry the bulk of the goalscoring burden, hence, giving up on Moore just because of one awful month isn’t a wise thing to do.

A better solution will be to make Sam Smith the deserving starter in upcoming league games. And Moore should be given decent 30-40 minute cameos to help him find his rhythm back. The FA Cup game lies in two weeks, and Kieffer Moore should be deployed as the starter there for the entire evening.

Hopefully, some goals will come from Moore’s boots in the new month while Sam Smith continues to be the pick of goals at Wrexham.
