Wrexham’s 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday saw them achieve their best away streak in the Championship apart from the 500th goal scored under Phil Parkinson.
Contrary to the expectations of a walkover for Wrexham, the game against Sheffield Wednesday was a scrappy affair. Despite being touted to dominate the Owls, Wrexham would be more than happy to return with a decent 1-0 victory.
While the Reds barely had difficulties in carrying the ball to the final third, the Owls’ low block held them helpless. Even after the 1-0 goal, Wrexham were minutes away from floundering it all if not for a Matty James line clearance in the end.
Ultimately, Wrexham will be grateful to secure a win that paved their re-entry into the playoff zone. However, not only did this victory add 3 more points to their tally, but it also set some profound records to brag about.
On that note, here’s a look at the 2 milestones Wrexham achieved with this Sheffield Wednesday win(and 2 more they get close to).
Milestones achieved Vs Sheffield Wednesday:
4 consecutive away wins in the Championship
This is the first-ever instance where Wrexham have recorded 4 consecutive wins on the road in the second division.
Before this season, the Reds’ best streak stood at only 2 away wins in the 78/79 and 80/81 season. Returning after 43 years in the Championship, Wrexham have doubled their best streak with 4 wins in a row.
Notably, away games had not been Wrexham’s forte for the first half of the season. Barring the back-to-back wins against Millwall and Norwich, the Reds struggled to register another away ‘W’ in their form chart for months.
Enters January stint, and Wrexham have made it 4 away wins on the bounce. This includes a 2-0 win over Blackburn on New Year’s Eve, a 2-1 victory days later against Derby, the heroic comeback 3-2 win over QPR and the recent 1-0 hard-fought win against the Owls.
500 goals landmark in Phil Parkinson era
Ever since Parkinson took over the Wrexham job in July 2021, he has transformed the club completely. One of the gaffer’s distinct strong aspects has been the emphasis on vertical play that has turned Wrexham’s attack into a goal-scoring machine.
The latest Sheffield Wednesday win was the 10th consecutive matchday in which Wrexham have scored in a row. Though a modest 1-0 win, it takes them to 500 goals scored under Parky in 243 games(average of 2.06 goals per game).

Talking of the top scorers under Parkinson’s reign, the top spot is taken by club legend Paul Mullin(with 105 competitive goals). Super Mulls is followed by other cult heroes in the tally, with Ollie Palmer and Elliot Lee scoring 44 and 40 goals respectively.
Though all of these club heroes are no longer a part of Wrexham’s plans, their legacy is being preserved by new stars filling in their roles. The winning goal against the Owls was Sam Smith’s 12th one, while his Wrexham tally feels like it’s just getting started.
Milestones Wrexham are close to achieving:
7 consecutive away league wins
Although Wrexham just set the 4-game winning record, their personal best remains a streak of 7 games on the road. It came back in the 4th tier during the 2002/03 season, and now, the Reds look forward to replicating that feat in the Championship.
Wrexham’s next 3 away games are scheduled against Bristol City, Charlton and Watford. While the presence of the Robins and Javi Gracia’s Watford makes consecutive wins challenging, a 7-game streak isn’t impossible.
Starting with Bristol, the Robins’ form has deteriorated after the departure of Anis Mehmeti and Zak Vyner’s Wrexham talks. A recent 0-5 defeat to Derby speaks of their defensive vulnerabilities. With Bristol just winning one game of their last five, Wrexham can build on their dreadful streak.
Just like Bristol, Watford’s form has taken a hard hit as well. Being winless from 4 games, including 2 losses and draws to relegation battling Portsmouth & Blackburn, Wrexham can fancy their chances in a potential 6-pointer game from a promotion perspective.
While Charlton’s form has been better than the two above, Wrexham’s dominance over the Addicks can get the job done. Factoring in their animosity ever since Nathan Jones’ “circus” claim, the Reds will look forward to a win double on Charlton.
150th Phil Parkinson win at Wrexham
The win at Hillsborough has brought Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham tally to 149 wins and counting. After a winning spell on the road, Wrexham return home to host Millwall, which could see Parky’s 150th win for the Reds.
With a 4th matchday win over Millwall, Wrexham had done the hard part of beating the side at the Den. Next up, Wrexham can leverage their roaring form to do the double over Millwall in a 6-pointer.
A possible win can see Wrexham displace Millwall to grab the 5th spot. And what better than this occasion? To bring the 150th win in the Phil Parkinson era. The script couldn’t get any better with a memorable win in front of the home fans. Let’s see if it materialises that way.
