Former Wrexham Captain James McClean wins his first trophy on Derry’s return as the side beats Shamrock Rovers to bag the President’s Cup trophy.
It’s been a frantic yet fulfilling end of the weekend for Wrexham. Despite being linked to multiple eleventh-hour transfers, a win to retain a playoff zone spot was worth it for the Wrexham faithful.
Additionally, the debut for several departees caught the fans’ attention, with most of the ex-Wrexham stars shining for their new clubs.
Starting from the Championship, Wrexham loanee Conor Coady delivered a solid performance to back his Charlton promise. He was joined by EFL star Paul Mullin, as the 31-year-old impressed Bradford fans despite just a cameo appearance on debut.
Saving the best for last, the former Wrexham captain is the one who won over the fans the most. Despite his inaugural game back in his Irish hometown, James McClean tasted silverware success with Derry City.
Having fared out his Wrexham career with an FA Cup victory, McClean restarted his Derry spell with a Cup game. In the traditional President’s Cup Final, James McClean stood crucial in helping his boyhood club win over Shamrock Rovers.
McClean drops a masterclass on Derry return
After playing at the pinnacle of the English division for 15 years, James McClean showed his abilities in his Derry debut. While an Irish return was touted to be quite easy for him, he didn’t disappoint with a brilliant show in the Cup win against Shamrock.
Despite starting in an unconventional role in central midfield, McClean leveraged his wing-back experience excellently. Competing in duels and tackles, the 36-year-old didn’t hesitate to switch on either flank to create opportunities.

Ultimately, James McClean was the one who laid the foundation for the winner. Outsmarting Rovers defender Max Kovalevskis, McClean played a wonderful cross in the box to Darragh Markey for the only goal in the game.
Apart from his sporting show, the chief provocateur didn’t disappoint the fans in entertainment, too. While the rest of the team ran to Markey following the goal, McClean went right to the Rovers fans to celebrate.
Stretching his arms out wide, James McClean announced his return in the Irish division in style. While not directly provocative as his English farewell gesture, McClean’s move right in the Rovers fans’ faces must’ve irked them.
In another incident, James McClean grabbed the spotlight again as he denied performing the media duties post-win. As per reports, it was due to the presence of one of his long-standing critics on the media panel.
A new chapter of Shamrock Rovers Vs Derry City begins
Notably, James McClean confined the grudges and the gesture celebration to the field. Post-game, the 36-year-old presented his softer side as he clicked photos with Shamrock fans and his local supporters.
While James McClean put the heat of the moment celebration to bed, the President’s Cup win might’ve begun a new chapter of Derry City Vs Shamrock Rovers.
Historically, Shamrock Rovers have been the undisputed giants of the Premier Division. Having won 5 of the last 6 league titles, Rovers have dominated the Irish division ever since the 2020s decade began.
Even last year, Shamrock were the ones who outclassed Derry City for the title by a 3-point margin.
Shamrock’s dominance extends beyond the league titles. Before 2026, they were the only side to win the President’s Cup twice in the last 5 years in 2022 and 2024. In the one time they emerged as the runner-up to Derry in 2023, the Rovers still won the league by flipping the script in the Premier Division.
A primary reason for James McClean’s return is to end the Rovers’ one-sided dominance and lead Derry to their first league title in 30 years. Will it happen? We’ll see as the new chapter of Derry Vs Sharock begins.
