‘Calm’ – Dominic Hyam admits he doesn’t lose sleep from 2-0 Millwall defeat

Wrexham captain Dominic Hyam has admitted that he doesn’t lose sleep from the Reds 2-0 Millwall defeat on the weekend at the Racecourse.

The 2-0 Millwall defeat exposed Wrexham’s defensive frailties like anything. First of all, Liberato Cacace went down in pain and that left the backline thin on pace and physicality. Issa Kabore had a few defensive lapses in the second half and so did Max Cleworth on that own goal.

Even the usual rock-solid captain Dominic Hyam had a drop off in the second half as compared to the first. The 30-year-old was slow in anticipating Femi Azeez’s inswinging deliveries from the right. On the 1-0 goal, Hyam gave a free header chance to Mihailo Ivanovic who mistimed his jump but got the last laugh with the own goal.

On the second, it was a horrible slip from Hyam that helped Millwall put the game to bed at 2-0. Wrexham were the more attacking side prior to that moment, but the experienced Scot’s fumble left Phil Parkinson’s side helpless. Both personally and as a collective, it was a poor home game for Dominic Hyam.

With a full week still left in the next Championship game, all eyes would be on Hyam and how he responds on the pitch following an error-filled Millwall performance.

Obviously, a good response will be on the back of Hyam’s mind. However, is the Scottish defender losing sleep over it? No, and Hyam has made his feelings crystal clear.

In his own words, the BBC quoted Dominic Hyam saying: “As a group we need to stay calm, refocus and go again. That’s the bigger picture. We need to see how far we’ve come, draw a line under it (the Millwall loss) and put in a performance next time.”

Currently, a lot of Wrexham fans are mourning the Millwall defeat as if the Reds bowed out of the promotion zone. Sure, the team had a hard luck with injuries and key moments not going their way. But, giving up on Wrexham’s promotion chances isn’t the way forward.

In that regard, it’s quite mature from Dominic Hyam to leave that Millwall evening behind.

Wrexham must avoid Dominic Hyam’s 2024/25 experience

There may be some Wrexham fans who can call it irresponsible on Dominic Hyam’s part for not calling out his teammates on the Millwall defeat. Many captains and senior defenders often criticise their teammates so that the poor result doesn’t get repeated again.

However, this is the Championship. The season is 46 games long, and a good campaign mainly depends on a positive momentum around the club. In the previous 2024/25 season, Hyam’s Blackburn Rovers had maintained a strong grip on the fifth position for months but a five match losing streak ruined everything.

And the funny part was, most of those defeats came up against struggling Championship sides. It clearly shows that Blackburn Rovers crumbled under the weight of their expectations. One by one, every shocking defeat broke Rovers morale and they couldn’t catch up with the playoffs race in time.

Consequently, Hyam and Rovers finished eighth despite laying a strong foundation for a playoffs finish early on. Wrexham shouldn’t repeat the same mistake Dominic Hyam’s former club Blackburn Rovers did. It’s a wise thing to learn from mistakes but crying over them for days serves no purpose for the present and future.

The next FA Cup 4th round tie against Ipswich Town is a big evening for Wrexham to gain some momentum by their side. Plus, there are no massive downsides to losing there. Hence, Phil Parkinson’s men should forget that Millwall defeat and test Kieran McKenna’s promotion chasers Ipswich Town to their limit.
