Phil Parkinson doesn’t wish to repeat the Elliot Lee mistake Wrexham made just after the 2025 summer transfer window ended.
A week ago, Wrexham dropped their post-January transfer window squad list for the Championship. With 3 new faces, there was an optimism about the Reds fully stocking up their 25-man slot. During September, Wrexham named only 24 players instead of 25.
Fast forward to now, Wrexham have gone a step backwards at 23 players. At first, fans may conclude that the excessive loan deals conducted in the final week of the transfer window might have shrunk the squad below 25 players.
Looking carefully, it’s not the case. Backup centre-back Lewis Brunt and Deputy goalkeeper Callum Burton have been left out as things stand. Honestly, the Red Dragons might cut it just as fine without the removed duo all thanks to having a strong defensive department.
And if they pull an Ollie Rathbone-like turnaround, then even better for Wrexham. Still, that’s not the primary reason for which boss Phil Parkinson and the club omitted the backline duo.
Phil Parkinson doesn’t wish to repeat Elliot Lee mistake again
First of all, it’s crystal clear that Callum Burton starting in Wrexham’s goal is a weaker possibility than Lewis Brunt arriving at the heart of the defence. Phil Parkinson also believes the same way, and that’s why he was glad with Brunt returning to the first-team fold months after his Middlesbrough injury.

What that means for the 23 man squad list is that Phil Parkinson has avoided an Elliot Lee mistake from September. In his own words, the Leader Live quoted Parkinson saying: “We did it with Elliot Lee in the first window where we put him in the squad and then he had to have a knee operation, and there was a couple of players out there we could have brought in if we hadn’t filled the 25.”
Therefore, omitting Brunt momentarily has served two purposes for Wrexham. If the 25-year-old shows he can be a real deal at the back in training sessions, then Parkinson can utilize him for centre-back rotation. If not, then the door is always open to grab upto 2 free agents who can offer a lot to the current Reds first-team.
Manchester City legend Raheem Sterling has been floated as a perfect forward recruitment for Wrexham on a free transfer. Sure, the former England international has slowed down in recent years, but he can be a decent fit in the Wrexham front three provided he is willing enough to drop down to the Championship.
Will Lewis Brunt leave Wrexham like Elliot Lee?
It’s wise to not let backup players hanging in the team without being clear on their future. Else, there can be another Elliot Lee situation with forgotten players complaining about their sudden lack of playing minutes. So, can Lewis Brunt leave Wrexham in the similar manner as Elliot Lee did?

Nothing is certain, but Brunt’s career at the Racecourse might end well without chaos. He is 25 and used to complement Dominic Hyam and Max Cleworth just four months ago. Hence, Brunt will be more concerned about winning back his centre-back role at Wrexham.
Also, players tend to complain less when they are below the age of 30. Even if Brunt can’t break into the defence until May, he has his prime years ahead of him. A little Championship experience will be enough for Brunt to grab another second-tier offer soon, after all, clubs here love to sign cheaper talents who can still improve further in their career.
That was not the advantage with an ageing Elliot Lee. For these reasons, Lewis Brunt can easily leave Wrexham without feeling betrayed regarding the minutes he was promised earlier.
