Wrexham star Josh Windass expresses his longing for an easier 5th round tie at home after knocking off Ipswich Town with a masterclass performance.
Being up for an FA Cup knockout instead of the regular Championship schedule, Wrexham did their job perfectly against Ipswich. The 1-0 win over the Tractor Boys secured their entry to the 5th FA Cup round for the first time after the 1996/97 campaign.
However, more than the result itself, the timing of this victory assures Wrexham fans. And all because a win over a fellow promotion contender instils confidence after the Reds’ difficult February start.
Coming on the back of a Millwall defeat, Wrexham didn’t have the best monthly start after losing on a couple of accolades for Sam Smith and Parky. But the way the duo responded, along with another star player in Josh Windass, remains commendable.
Josh Windass was the star in Wrexham’s FA Cup win
Windass hadn’t been at his usual best since Wrexham made a mid-season switch to the 3-4-3 system. Being sometimes put on the right wing or in the centre, other times, his best moments had been rare apart from the cameo in the QPR comeback win.
However, Windass put all that past him against Ipswich in the FA Cup clash. Operating as a CAM, Josh Windass stood out as the best player for Wrexham upfront.
In a crucial contest, Josh Windass started the proceedings as early as the first minute. Windass launched his first shot of the game within 44 seconds on the clock after noticing Ipswich keeper out of his box.
As the game progressed, Josh Windass’ attacking prowess grew stronger and more effective. Finally, the attacker achieved success as he put a perfect cross from Ryan Longman in the net with a close-range finish.
Though Ipswich tried to find the equaliser until late in the game, Windass’ 34th-minute goal stood as the difference between the two sides. While it helped the forward rediscover his form, it sent Wrexham to the 5th round of the FA Cup.
Windass names 2 wishes for the FA Cup 5th round draw
Being the star of the show, Josh Windass was asked to reflect on the game and express his choice of opponents in the next round. The 32-year-old kept his demands super favourable for Wrexham with a win-win wish.
As quoted by RobRyanRed, Josh Windass said: “Hopefully NOT a big team away because you don’t touch the ball!”

Clearly, Josh Windass wants an easier opponent for the 5th round, with a home draw being even more convenient. While it feels like a dream desire, Windass’ demand speaks to Wrexham’s impeccable home record.
Wrexham have never lost at the Racecourse in the FA Cup under Phil Parkinson. If the Reds get a manageable opponent in the 5th round, they can reach the quarter-finals for the first time after the iconic 1996/97 campaign.
Which teams can fulfil Josh Windass’ wish?
Wrexham’s FA Cup history has been full of memorable giant killings. Factoring that and the magic of the Cup, Reds fans won’t even fear drawing out Arsenal in the next round.
However, the side’s task can become a lot easier if they get a lucky draw.
Being a promotion contender that has recently defeated Ipswich, Wrexham won’t mind Championship teams for an FA Cup clash.
This makes Norwich City and Southampton brilliant draws among the remaining sides despite Wrexham’s not-so-dominating track record against the two.
Then comes the luckiest case if Wrexham can pull off a lower-tier opponent. This includes a draw against Mansfield or any of Wigan Athletic, Grimsby Town or Port Vale if they pull off an upset in their respective yet to decided 4th round ties.
Finally, comes the most unfavourable draw of facing a Premier League opponent. Having experienced the struggles of knocking off Nottingham in 4th round, Wrexham fans won’t want this as the first choice. Still, the Reds can pull off an entertaining fight if they manage a home draw again.
