Former Wrexham striker Ollie Palmer reveals boss Phil Parkinson’s desire after the club’s FA Cup win against Ipswich Town.
Time and again, the Racecourse has proven to be Wrexham’s fortress in giant Cup killings. Be it the 2-1 win over Arsenal in 1992, a similar win over Middlesbrough in 1999, or the recent victory over Nottingham in the 3rd round of the FA Cup, Wrexham has recorded many memorable Cup nights.
The Reds’ FA Cup home record ensures that special guests always turn up. After co-owner Ryan Reynolds in the 3rd round tie against Nottingham, Wrexham had another distinguished visitor recently.
He’s none other than former club hero Ollie Palmer. Making a surprise return to the Racecourse for the 4th round FA Cup game, the club ambassador would’ve reminisced about his Wrexham days for sure.
While the overall performance caught Palmer’s eye, the ex-striker would’ve been left amazed by Phil Parkinson. And all for the manager’s bold instincts and the very same confident plans, irrespective of the game involved.
Phil Parkinson chose not to rotate in FA Cup clash
Be it the FA Cup, EFL Cup or Vertu Trophy competitions, managers treat the Cup games as an opportunity for heavy rotation. Most gaffers either pick out-of-favour players or young players to give the core players rest.
With a promotion charge in consideration, Phil Parkinson was speculated to rotate a bit for the FA Cup clash. However, the boss consciously chose not to and came out with a win.
Though Phil Parkinson made as many as 5 changes to his starting XI against Millwall, he didn’t choose second-choice players in any position. On the other hand, Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna compromised on his starting XI with 10 changes and risked the result.
Undoubtedly, not opting for rotation risked the chance of injuries on an already long bill of health for Wrexham. But Phil Parkinson and men went all in with their best game and eliminated Ipswich from the FA Cup.
Ollie Palmer knows Parky’s thinking after Ipswich win
After facing a heartbreaking EFL Trophy elimination with Swindon, watching Wrexham go through would’ve given joy to Ollie Palmer. His passionate celebration of Josh Windass’ goal expressed what it meant to him to see his former side go through to the 5th round of the FA Cup.
Notably, Ollie Palmer revealed something very exciting after Wrexham’s victory. While everyone involved celebrated the win, Palmer predicted Phil Parkinson’s thoughts on how he’d be thinking about the promotion next.

In the post-match interview, Ollie Palmer praised Parky, saying: “You know, he’s put together a great squad and now they are fighting to be in the playoffs. I’m sure inside, he’ll be saying: ‘ I don’t want the playoffs. I want automatic (promotion)’ .”
Having been the 2nd-highest top scorer for Wrexham in Phil Parkinson’s era, Palmer is completely aware of the gaffer’s thinking and plans. If the club hero is saying so, Parky is likely planning for a spectacular final third of the season to eye an automatic promotion.
Phil Parkinson is super competitive in his Wrexham plans
So far, Wrexham has had an excellent Championship campaign. Despite being touted for a relegation battle at the beginning, Phil Parkinson has the Reds sitting in sight of another promotion.
However, the latest Ollie Palmer claim delves deeper into Parky’s ambitions. Though Wrexham lie 12 points behind 2nd-placed Coventry, Phil Parkinson’s plans for automatic promotion speak for his winning mentality.
The fact that is really commendable is that Phil Parkinson is managing his Championship plans in parallel to the FA Cup progress.
Already undergoing the club’s best Cup run in decades, Wrexham can embark on a memorable FA Cup story if they draw a manageable opponent. On the other hand, an automatic promotion push further strengthens Wrexham’s Premier League candidature even more.
Wrexham’s previous 3 seasons have ended in automatic promotion. If Parky achieves his goal of a 4th one, the Reds can write history by being the first club to register such an iconic promotion story.
