‘Boys’ – Ipswich Town defender left in awe of Wrexham after 5-3 win

Ipswich Town defender Leif Davis was left in awe of Wrexham in the aftermath of the Red Dragons 5-3 Ipswich Town win at home.

Wrexham headed into the Ipswich Town game after two winless weeks in the Championship. A third one could have been fatal for the playoffs push. Then, there is the scary law of averages in football, which also pointed to a massive Ipswich Town win at the third time of asking.

After all, how long could Wrexham stay undefeated against them and not even concede a single goal? Well, Phil Parkinson’s men succumbed to 3 goals on the night but hit 5 of their own just as they did against Sheffield United on Boxing Day.

In some ways, this Wrexham win was another 5-3 comeback. Except for the fact that Ipswich Town only led once for twenty minutes, unlike Sheffield United who kept the Reds in their shadows for over 75 minutes before bowing down.

Moreover, Wrexham were the ones often searching for the go ahead goal across both halves. Mind you, they did that against the fourth best Championship team at the moment. As such, this Wrexham win can be dubbed as a walk in the park victory over Ipswich Town, who were trying their best to avoid a defeat on the night.

Hands down, Kieran McKenna will be having the most angry face in the Ipswich Town dressing room. He spent a week trying to justify his team’s weak FA Cup display in front of Wrexham, then named a strong starting lineup with 10 changes but they also couldn’t beat Wrexham.

After him, Leif Davis appears the most irritated from this 5-3 Wrexham thrashing. So much that Davis was left in awe of Wrexham’s work rate on the pitch.

In his own words, East Anglian Daily Times quoted Davis saying: “When we went 3-2 up, we did start the second half really well but there were moments in the first half where we looked like a bunch of boys. It looked like they wanted it more in the first half, flying into tackles. That’s what we’ve got to be like from the start.”

Not sure, if Davis intended to praise Wrexham but that was a class act from him. Not a lot of top Championship players stay respectable to the opponent after suffering a 5-3 humiliation at the full-time whistle.

What next for Wrexham after 5-3 Ipswich Town win?

The set of four blockbuster games is over for Wrexham after clinching the three points from the Racecourse last night. A defeat to Millwall and a disappointing 2-2 Bristol City draw were harsh at times, but they taught a lot to Phil Parkinson’s men about the playoffs race.

Now that Wrexham have jumped back to the sixth place, it’s worth noting that they have gained a significant upper hand on their closest rivals. Yesterday, Derby County fell to a 1-0 Watford defeat. Blackburn Rovers pipped Preston North End late with a 1-0 winner and Swansea City also got the better of Bristol City with a 1-0 win.

All these results coupled with a 5-3 Ipswich Town win means that Wrexham are 2 points ahead of seventh placed Birmingham City. The gap only increases as we go down.

With a couple of easy fixtures at home against Portsmouth and away to Charlton Athletic, Phil Parkinson’s men can possibly give a tough fight to Hull City for the fifth place when February ends.
