Wrexham icon Dennis Lawrence has departed West Brom’s assistant managerial role after the marching orders for boss Eric Ramsay.
Last month, the return of Dennis Lawrence in the Championship must have caught the attention of Wrexham fans. It’s for how the club legend joined in as West Brom’s assistant manager to help the struggling side mid-season.
Fast forward to now, and it’s been a completely different story for Wrexham and club legend Dennis Lawrence. While the Reds have jumped up the Championship table to the playoff zone, the latter has struggled severely.
Despite overseeing 9 games in the assistant duties, Lawrence hasn’t tasted any victory at West Brom. The recent development deprives him of the chance to improve this tally further as the Wrexham icon has been given his marching orders alongside head coach Eric Ramsay.
This decision comes as the Hawthorns find themselves in a worse position than before. Having handed Ramsay & Lawrence the responsibility to improve the club’s bottom-table status, West Brom now teeters on the edge of relegation.
Factoring this in, the club’s recent development on Ramsay & Lawrence’s future makes sense. West Brom relieved the duo of their duties, saying: “West Bromwich Albion have parted company with men’s first team Head Coach Eric Ramsay. Assistant Head Coach Dennis Lawrence has also departed The Hawthorns.”
Dennis Lawrence follows exit door after Ramsay’s sacking
During his playing time, Lawrence’s on-field contributions are well documented. Having achieved an impressive 300+ career appearances and an International career worth looking back on, he was the first active Wrexham player to feature in the World Cup.
Despite this prominence as a player, his managerial career hasn’t gone as well as many would expect. While Dennis Lawrence has been in management for over 15 years, he has had limited memorable moments.
Here, the latest marching order puts a significant blemish on Lawrence’s managerial career. That’s because he’s fared out his West Brom spell alongside Eric Ramsay as one of the shortest tenures ever in the second tier.

Dennis Lawrence and Ramsay lived a Hawthorns spell as short as just 44 days. The duo failed to lead West Brom to even a single victory in this time, and the club now finds itself close to relegation to League One.
Currently, West Brom sit only a point ahead of relegation-threatened Leicester on the back of a 10-game winless streak. While Eric Ramsey and Lawrence have not been the sole cause, the duo bears a significant part of the responsibility for the Hawthorns’ fate.
While Wrexham icon Dennis Lawrence would want to move on from this soon, this nightmare West Brom tenure surely goes down as his worst managerial spell ever.
Lawrence’s dismissal puts a memorable reunion off charts
Dennis Lawrence has undisputably been one of the finest Wrexham legends to don the Dragons’ shirt. That’s why the Championship return news of the former EFL Trophy winner had a fair share of Wrexham fans excited, too.
With the return contest between Wrexham and West Brom impending, it was touted to be a memorable reunion for the Reds with their former icon.
The fact that the Hawthorns got the better of Wrexham in the first Championship meeting this season anticipated a bittersweet revenge against club legend Dennis Lawrence. However, the recent development puts any such possibility to bed indefinitely.
So far, Wrexham’s Hollywood story has seen multiple promotions, several iconic wins and celebrations, but it has lacked that tinge of facing former players for quite a while. The sacking of Dennis Lawrence extends the wait further while the club icon’s future remains unknown.
On a personal note, Lawrence’s work alongside Eric Ramsay in consecutive spells could see the Wrexham icon land another post under the manager. However, with the credentials of any potential club unclear, his reunion with Wrexham looks to be on hold for the foreseeable future.
Given Wrexham continue their Premier League push, any possible meetup may only be likely in the top flight now. It remains to be seen if Lawrence ever returns to the Racecourse as an opponent.
