Phil Parkinson emphasises Wrexham’s heroic defending effort in the box that helped them see out a 1-0 win against Charlton at the Valley.
Following consecutive wins in the Championship, Wrexham entered the Charlton game in high spirits. Whether it was their impressive form on the road or other contributing factors, everything pointed to a win for the Reds against the Addicks.
However, the team sheet likely sent a jolt through Wrexham fans. With the club picking up the third kit for the matchday, the club faithful must have doubted their initial optimism for the Charlton game.
For the record, Wrexham had never taken all three points this season while wearing the blue and white striped jersey. Though the Reds managed to improve that record with a win over Charlton, it wasn’t a comfortable victory by any measure.
This was also evident in Phil Parkinson’s post‑match media address. Usually lyrical about Wrexham’s vertical attacking play and brilliant goals, the boss instead highlighted how resilient defending secured the crucial three points at The Valley.
As quoted by the BBC, Parky mentioned: “It was always going to be a hard game because Nathan’s teams give everything and they’re fighting for points.”
Parkinson added, “But we showed incredible resilience to get the win. We came under a bit of pressure but the way we defended the box today was exceptional and it was important we saw it through.”
Wrexham denied Charlton’s xG of 1.26 to secure clean sheet
So far, Wrexham’s vertical play philosophy has seen them consistently outscore their opponents to bag crucial Championship points this season. That scoring prowess has been particularly vital in their last four games, where they’ve taken 7 points despite conceding eight goals.
However, the game against Charlton was a notable exception in this trend. This time, Wrexham brought out their best defensive display to claim the hard-fought 3 points against Nathan Jones’ wilful side.
Previously, Wrexham had limited their opponents’ xG to establish themselves as the better side. Against Charlton, heroic defending in the box saw them deny a mammoth 1.26 xG on their way to a clean sheet victory.
Out of the 12 shots fired by Charlton, Wrexham’s backline blocked as many as 6 attempts to ease off the pressure on keeper Arthur Okonkwo. However, when the moment called for it, Okonkwo pulled off a match-winning save to deny Charlton a late equaliser.

During the final moments of the regular 90 minutes, Wrexham battled a relentless barrage from Charlton’s attack force. Though the defensive unit did appreciably well to break the hosts’ flow with timely interceptions, it all boiled down to a throttling attempt from Sonny Carey in the end.
In the 90th minute, Carey launched a full-fledged attempt at Wrexham’s net. Despite being screened by multiple bodies in the box, Okonkwo demonstrated cat-like reflexes to keep Wrexham leading the game.
Though the Addicks’ attempt to find an equaliser continued for some time, this save from Okonkwo proved to be the difference between the two sides at full-time.
George Dobson shines in absence of Ben Sheaf & Matty James
As much as Arthur Okonkwo deserves the credit for that result-defining save, contributions from other teammates can’t be overlooked. This is especially true for George Dobson, as the midfielder shone against his former side in a memorable performance.
After Matty James’ prolonged recovery and Ben Sheaf’s season‑ending injury, there were real concerns about Wrexham’s defensive midfield. However, Dobson’s resurgence has meant the star duo’s absence has rarely been felt.
Having replaced Ben Sheaf in the Ipswich game, Dobson has seamlessly returned to the starting XI. His reintegration has sparked a turnaround, with Wrexham winning all three league games since.
Recently, George Dobson’s performance against Charlton was a defensive masterclass. Shielding Wrexham’s backline and breaking up Charlton’s attacks time and again, the defensive midfielder proved an impassable barrier for the hosts.
Though Dobson’s presence was felt throughout the game, he was particularly crucial in the final 20 minutes of regular game time. As the hosts surged up in numbers towards Wrexham’s goal, Dobson shone with multiple clearances while orchestrating Wrexham’s defence with his leadership.
Undeniably, Dobson’s teammates complemented his effort in a collective defensive display. But so far, the 28‑year‑old has almost single-handedly stepped up in the absence of Ben Sheaf and Matty James, and the club will hope for more such performances from him.
