Wrexham loanee Conor Coady hints becoming a football manager in the future

Wrexham defender Conor Coady hints at his managerial ambitions after playing a player-cum-manager role at Charlton Athletic.

Despite 48 hours since the final whistle at The Valley, Wrexham fans are still soaking in the aftermath of the 1‑0 win over Charlton. The fact that this clash unfolded without Conor Coady even involved only speaks to the depth of the growing rivalry between the two sides.

A lot of Wrexham fans would be eager to follow Conor Coady’s progress at his Charlton loan spell. The news of his blistering debut only heightened the curiosity about him after he had been left out at Wrexham.

While EFL’s loan clause prevented Coady from facing his parent club, Wrexham, the defender still played his part in the clash off the field. This came after he made a surprise revelation for Wrexham fans within days of their 1‑0 win over Charlton.

The update hints at Conor Coady’s player‑cum‑manager role at Charlton. Recently, the defender opened up about how he’s effectively acting as an “extension of the manager”, which is a bold sign of his ambitions to move into coaching down the line.

Coady confessed to the BBC about his inaugural call with Charlton boss Nathan Jones, saying: “I know what my job is. I know what it was from the very first phone call I had with him and what he wanted from me.”

Coady added: “It’s nice to be back in there, it’s nice to be playing a different role again and just learning as much as I can. I’m loving every minute of being back involved. But the biggest thing about the job that I’ve been given to come to this club is to make this club better.”

Conor Coady joining Nathan Jones makes perfect sense now

Back when Conor Coady emerged as a surprise choice for Charlton in January, it surprised most of the Wrexham fans. And rightly so, for Nathan Jones and Addicks’ intricate relations with the club.

A move for an out‑of‑favour star like Coady made little sense in January. But fast forward to now, and the move is playing perfectly for both the stakeholders involved in the deal.

That’s because Conor Coady and Charlton complemented each other’s ambitions perfectly.

In Coady, Charlton gained an experienced English international with Premier League pedigree. Beyond his on‑field contributions, his top‑flight insights could prove invaluable for a side back in the Championship after years away.

On the other hand, Nathan Jones and Charlton provided Coady with a brilliant platform to kick-start his managerial journey.

As the 33-year-old himself admitted, he’s playing a player-cum-managerial role at Charlton. Simply put, Conor Coady is fundamental to the Addicks’ sporting operations while enjoying significant authority after boss Nathan Jones.

While many clubs could’ve offered this unique opportunity to Conor Coady, Charlton felt like a no-brainer for several reasons.

Firstly, Nathan Jones’ personal defender-turned-manager story must’ve resonated deeply with Coady. Secondly, a first-hand project at a bottom mid-table Championship club like Charlton ought to be the natural step for Coady to start in management after he’s been running his own Conor Coady Academy for quite some time now.

Coady’s player-cum manager role will please Charlton fans

At Charlton, Conor Coady has been an undisputed starter for Nathan Jones, apart from his management duties. While it’s been a brief spell so far, it’s been a success on various trackable metrics.

Barring the recent Wrexham game(where Coady couldn’t feature), the defender has helped Charlton achieve 2 wins and 3 draws in the last 6 games. That’s a massive improvement from the position when the Addicks teetered at the edge of the relegation zone not long ago.

While the whole Charlton unit deserves credit for it, Conor Coady’s contribution has been particularly important. Be it offering versatility in the lineup or imparting wisdom in managerial duties, he has helped improve Charlton’s overall structure recently.

Before Coady debuted for Charlton, the Addicks were coming on the back of a humiliating 0-4 defeat to Millwall. Fast forward to now, and Charlton have conceded a combined total of 6 goals in the last 6 games.

That’s definitely not forgetting the upgrade in Charlton’s offensive play. In the recent matchday against Wrexham, the Addicks were unlucky not to grab some crucial points at home. Having garnered an impressive xG of 1.26, Coady’s inspired Charlton side came incredibly close to winning against his parent club, Wrexham.

All in all, Conor Coady’s Charlton spell is going as per plan for everyone involved. While a loan agreement currently ensures his stay at the club until the end of this season, the possibility of him joining the club permanently isn’t ruled out for the future.
