A look at the three talking points most Wrexham fans might’ve missed following the eventful FA Cup elimination to Chelsea.
From start to finish, Wrexham’s FA Cup contest against Chelsea offered endless material for discussion. Be it George Dobson’s yellow card upgrade to a straight red or the disallowed Wrexham equaliser that had even pundits split, the clash had plenty for everyone who tuned in.
But beneath these headline moments, multiple storylines flew under the radar in the action-packed FA Cup knockout. Here’s a look at three such talking points that you might’ve missed from Wrexham Vs Chelsea.
George Dobson stood Wrexham’s underrated hero Vs Chelsea
Following the FA Cup elimination, Wrexham fans are waxing lyrical over Callum Doyle, Sam Smith, and other players. While they deserve all the buzz, there stood a Wrexham hero whose efforts flew under the radar, mainly because his matchday ended with a straight red card.
The player being discussed is Wrexham’s underrated star, George Dobson.
Initially, Dobson’s participation against Chelsea lay in jeopardy following his wrist operation days before the FA Cup knockout. However, not only did he feature in the high-stakes contest with a cast on his right hand, but Dobson played a superb role in Wrexham’s midfield.
Be it making decisive tackles, doing crucial recoveries or interceptions, Dobson did it all apart from his brilliant set-piece deliveries. On nearly every Chelsea attack, Dobson stood as the first Wrexham player to go take charge and break their momentum.
Combine this with his exceptional pressing, and it’s easy to conclude that Dobson left his heart on the pitch for Wrexham. When the moment demanded it, he sacrificed himself for the greater good of the team.
Notably, Chelsea forward Garnacho was accelerating on a counterattack and had left multiple Wrexham defenders in the dust. Without a second thought, Dobson flung into the forward and halted him from a stoppage-time winner.
While George Dobson had a splendid performance overall, this challenge ended his matchday with a straight red card. Ultimately, he couldn’t see Wrexham end up as the winning side despite having given his all for them.
Dom Hyam completes 400 career appeareances
Last summer, Dom Hyam’s deadline day signing was an emergency fix by Wrexham for the disappointing Conor Coady signing. Fast forward to now, and Hyam has lived up to the role handed to him with utmost responsibility.
Since arriving, Hyam has been the most reliable defensive leader for Wrexham. Having played in every Championship game since his debut, his spell has been characterised by his ability to lead and take responsibility on the pitch.
It wouldn’t be wrong to mention that Dom Hyam’s leadership reminds fans of fan-favourite captain James McClean. Needless to say, the club doesn’t hesitate to give Hyam his due as well.
Recently, Wrexham celebrated Hyam’s personal milestone as the defender completed 400 senior club appearances in his career. Wrexham AFC congratulated him on the success, saying: “Congratulations to Dom Hyam who reached 400 career appearances in last night’s FA Cup fixture against Chelsea FC.”

To note, nearly half of Hyam’s career total of 400 appearances have come for Coventry. While he is yet to achieve a promotion with Wrexham, Dom Hyam has been a two-time promotion winner during his Coventry spell.
The centre-back was crucial to Coventry’s rise from League Two to the Championship, which saw them jump two tiers within three seasons. After spending two years in the Championship with Coventry, Hyam played an impressive 135 games for Blackburn before joining Wrexham.
A key reason that motivated Wrexham to make a move for Dom Hyam last summer was his intense durability. In the 2024/25 Championship season, Hyam played every minute of the league campaign.
Since debuting for Wrexham, Dom Hyam has continued his splendid run, and the Reds will be hoping he keeps going strong.
Wrexham Vs Southampton playoff decider likely to be rescheduled
While Wrexham spent the last week away from Championship football, their solid lead going has them ahead of their playoff rivals. The Reds lie ahead of the 7th-ranked Derby side by 3 points with a game in hand.
However, Wrexham need to maintain their league momentum to secure a playoff spot. On that front, a major development has emerged following the conclusion of the FA Cup fifth-round ties.
The Wrexham Vs Southampton clash scheduled for early April has been widely considered a playoff decider. With the Saints chasing down Wrexham for the 6th playoff spot, everything points to it being a must-win for Wrexham.
This crucial clash is likely to be rescheduled as Southampton have progressed to the 6th round of the FA Cup after beating Fulham.
The FA Cup sixth round is set for 4th and 5th April 2026. This creates a fixture nightmare for Southampton, as they host Ipswich on 3 April, contest an FA Cup clash days later, and then travel to Wrexham on 6 April, all within the space of four days.
As a result, Southampton’s Championship games against Ipswich and Wrexham will likely be rescheduled in due course. While the new fixture date and time will be announced following the sixth-round FA Cup draw, Wrexham Vs Southampton will likely be shifted by only a couple of days.
This sets up the new timeline for the playoff decider between Wrexham and Southampton around 7th or 8th April.
