Wrexham player ratings from 2-1 Hull City defeat: £1.5m signing was biggest flop

Wrexham player ratings from 2-1 Hull City defeat. £1.5m Wrexham winter signing was the biggest flop on the night.

Wrexham legend Mickey Thomas issued an FA Cup warning to the current squad ahead of the Chelsea showdown. He insisted the FA Cup evening might disrupt the Reds league momentum. Well, turns out he was right to fear so.

Wrexham have begun the first of 4 tricky fixtures scheduled within two weeks on a horrible note. It’s always tough playing a top team like Hull City, more so when Wrexham hadn’t beaten the Tigers within the regulated 90 minutes in the past two meetings.

That streak has increased to three now. The visitors came prepared to pile more misery on Wrexham’s growing list of injuries, specifically in midfield. Hull City never let Phil Parkinson’s men relax and dictate the tempo of the game and as a result, kept Wrexham on the back foot from the start.

Hull could have scored more than 3 goals on the night but that doesn’t hide Wrexham’s poor performance. That said, below are the Wrexham player ratings of every starter on a scale of 10 from a subpar showing in front of Hull City at home.

Wrexham player ratings from 2-1 Hull City defeat

GK: Arthur Okonkwo – 7

Quickly went back when Hull City attempted to surprise Okonkwo with a long range effort. Was beaten to a dipping free kick from the right side but learned from it and went the right way to deny Joe Gelhardt a second strine within 3 minutes.

Couldn’t anticipate the 2-0 goal but the blame goes to Wrexham’s defence for that.

CB: Callum Doyle – 6

Rushed in a lot of mistimed fouls in the first half. Brought down Charlie Hughes, which led to the free kick goal. Failed to reach the ball before Gelhardt and that action was punished for a penalty.

Still, it was better that Doyle didn’t receive a second yellow. Else, Wrexham would be in much more trouble alongside the existing injuries.

CB: Dom Hyam – 7

Hyam stepped up with a couple of massive interventions before the break. Still, his compatriot Oli McBurnie managed to beat Hyam to a pass that resulted in the spot kick.

CB: Max Cleworth – 5

Cleworth’s confidence is at an all time low since February and it was the same story at Hull City. Lewis Koumas managed to get the better of Cleworth on the left side. The Hull winger scored the second although Cleworth wasn’t the one leaving him unmarked in that action.

LWB: George Thomason – 5

Cleared away the rebound after Hull City’s missed penalty. Rest, it was a tiring night for Thomason who had to resort to defending key passes instead of laying some crosses up top for Wrexham.

CM: Zak Vyner – 4

Atrocious performance from £1.5m man Zak Vyner in the holding midfielder role. He asked for Okonkwo’s pass but failed to control it and gave away a dangerous 1v1 chance.

Lost the ball near the edge of the box that led Callum Doyle to foul Hughes and get a yellow card. Phil Parkinson called Vyner off at half-time and the team improved in the build up play.

CM: Lewis O’Brien – 7

Came back to defend corners in the first half but got more attacking freedom in the second. Hull City constantly double teamed O’Brien, still the 27-year-old midfielder kept pushing forward as an advanced playmaker.

RWB: Ryan Longman – 5

Longman joined Cleworth in stopping Lewis Koumas but that didn’t prove to be effective. Intercepted a Hull City pass and bursted forward to release Josh Windass into space but nobody was present in the box to take advantage of it.

CAM: Nathan Broadhead – 7

Not many chances came from his boot but Broadhead’s positioning was world class on the 2-1 goal. Sent faint hopes of a Wrexham comeback but that didn’t materialize yesterday.

CAM: Josh Windass – 6

Linked well with Ryan Longman on the right flank but there was no Wrexham forward in the box to make the most of his run. Took a decent shot from a narrow angle, lost a few aerial duels. Still, he was much better compared to his teammates.

ST: Sam Smith – 6

Lacked service and hence, came back to help out the defence on set pieces. Showed good presence of mind to leave Issa Kabore’s cross to freely standing Broadhead rather than rushing to attempt it himself.
