‘Top 10’ – Wrexham coach tells brutal truth from 2-1 Sheffield United turnaround

Wrexham’s assistant coach Steve Parkin hails the 2-1 turnaround victory against Sheffield United among the top 10 games in his tenure at the club.

Matchday 39 of the Championship season has concluded, and Wrexham go into the two-week-long break in high spirits. That’s because their 2-1 win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane keeps them level at 63 points with playoff rivals Southampton.

Notably, Wrexham’s trip to Bramall Lane was far from a perfect performance. After a first half that exposed their vulnerabilities, the 2‑1 result was hardly the dominant display fans might have hoped for.

However, the post-game celebrations at Bramall Lane overshadowed that feeling entirely. Wrexham’s assistant coach Steve Parkin went on to mention how this comeback victory was among the “top-10” games in his tenure at the club for the pressure situations it came in.

As quoted by BBC Sport Wales, Parkin mentioned, “The manager’s just said in the dressing room that it’s right up there, we’ve been here five years now, in our top 10 of games that we probably needed to win and we needed to keep our run going.”

“Top 10” claim makes sense for Wrexham’s Bramall Lane victory

It’s fair to say Wrexham’s win against Sheffield United wasn’t their most convincing display. But Steve Parkin is spot on to hail this victory among the top 10 he has seen at the club for several reasons.

The first and foremost reason is Wrexham’s injury-crisis hit squad. Despite George Dobson’s return, the club were without several key starters like Kieffer Moore, Matty James, Ben Sheaf, and Libby Cacace.

Given that Wrexham still managed to see out their frantic schedule with an away win speaks of the significance of this 2-1 result.

Additionally, the circumstances leading to the Sheffield United game make the win far more special. Having missed out on the opportunity to leapfrog Hull City for the 5th spot and then slipping out of the playoff zone, the Bramall Lane victory is praiseworthy for the pressure situation it came in.

Finally, the fact that it wasn’t Wrexham’s typical dominating display itself indicates how difficult this win was. With Sheffield United flooding the box from the first whistle, the Reds did reasonably well to not concede early goals like the Boxing Day clash.

Despite the home crowd in the Blades’ favour, Wrexham peaked in the decisive moments to punish the home side. Though the Reds only generated a few good chances upfront, they eventually capitalised on them, unlike Sheffield United.

In the end, Wrexham’s 2‑1 comeback win is far more impressive than many fans might realise based on what they witnessed during the 90 minutes.

Wrexham’s 2-1 win over Blades is right there alongside the QPR victory

For a fair share of Wrexham fans, the win against QPR on their turf remains the best memory of this Championship season so far. Despite trailing 2-1 until the regular 90 minutes, the Reds scored twice in stoppage time to complete the iconic comeback.

The fact that this victory helped Wrexham jump from the 12th to the 6th spot in live rankings explains why it remains so celebrated.

However, Wrexham’s latest win over Sheffield United is no inferior to the QPR result, if not better.

Mapping out the similarities between the two games, Wrexham stood on the back foot in the first half of both afternoon kickoffs. Similar to the QPR turnaround, Wrexham’s equaliser against the run of play shifted the momentum and, with it, the result.

Finally, Wrexham were the better side and looked far more threatening than the hosts after finding the equaliser in both these games.

Given that the recent Bramall Lane win comes in the final stretch of the season, the 2-1 victory is in no way inferior to the 3-2 comeback against QPR. If Wrexham fancy their way to the playoffs, this Sheffield United result might be held in better regard than any convincing display.
