Wales and Wrexham fans unite in questioning Craig Bellamy’s call to pick Mark Harris over Nathan Broadhead for a decisive substitution.
The much‑anticipated Wales vs Bosnia and Herzegovina World Cup qualifier is over, and it’s a defeat Welsh fans will despise. Despite leading for a significant stretch of regular time, a late equaliser from Edin Džeko dashed their hopes.
Ultimately, Wales crashed out of the World Cup in the penalty shootout. Though it could’ve gone either way, fans are fuming at Craig Bellamy’s decisions that sealed their loss long before the penalties ended.
Bellamy’s in-game calls were questionable throughout the evening. However, the manager’s biggest mistake was not bringing on in‑form Wrexham star Nathan Broadhead in a crucial qualifier.
After being named on the bench initially, Broadhead was overlooked by Craig Bellamy despite his previous World Cup qualifier stats. Instead, Bellamy brought on an out‑of‑form Mark Harris when the game demanded Wales seal their win and capitalise on their 1‑0 lead.
Fans are infuriated with Craig Bellamy’s Mark Harris call
In an ideal scenario, Broadhead would have been Bellamy’s first substitute when Wales went 1‑0 up in the 51st minute. Having been decisive in previous cameos for his country, he possessed the X‑factor to extend Wales’s lead and put the game beyond Bosnia’s reach.
Instead, Bellamy introduced Mark Harris in the 75th minute. When the latter failed to provide anything significant, supporters were quick to criticise the decision to choose Harris over Broadhead.
One fan said, “You simply can’t be bringing on Mark Harris over Nathan Broadhead in a knockout World Cup qualifier. Mad call.”

Harris looked lost for most of his time on the pitch. Though tasked with combining with other attackers to seal the game, he lacked the instinctive positioning and clinical finish required on the night.
In a brilliant opportunity, Sorba Thomas’ cross in the last minutes of extra time found Harris at the near post. But a perfectly timed tackle left him helpless to make anything of the decisive chance.
While occasional bad days are understandable, Craig Bellamy’s blunder felt inexplicable. Despite Mark Harris’s unimpressive campaign, he gave him the nod over an in‑form Broadhead.
A supporter aptly summed it up, saying: “Mark Harris 2 championship goals and ZERO assists Nathan Broadhead 7 championship goals and 4 assists. Nice one Bellamy.”
Wrexham fans feel marginalised by Craig Bellamy
Wales’s elimination from the World Cup has come as a double blow for Wrexham fans. Beyond the heartbreak of missing out on a World Cup campaign, supporters are now convinced the national manager simply doesn’t rate their players.
One Wrexham supporter didn’t hide his feelings, saying, “Bellamy just doesn’t like Wrexham. Simple as that.”
It sounds like a strong accusation, but statistical evidence backs it to some extent. Despite Wrexham having as many as three Wales internationals in the senior squad, none of Danny Ward, Kieffer Moore, or Nathan Broadhead has featured regularly for Bellamy’s national side.
Agreed, Ward’s elbow injury and timely fitness concerns for Moore explain their absences, but the Nathan Broadhead case has been intriguing. Despite his Premier League pedigree and strong Championship form, Broadhead has seen game time come only rarely in Wales’s most decisive matches.
Previously, he was left out on the bench in the international friendly against England in October 2025. When he finally got minutes in the World Cup qualifiers the following month, he managed only around 100 minutes across three games despite registering two goal contributions in that time.
In Wales’ most decisive game in a while, Nathan Broadhead wasn’t offered game time again.
It’s worth noting that even aside from the Mark Harris substitution, Bellamy had three substitutions to bring in Broadhead. Instead, he made no further changes in extra time and didn’t even call Broadhead for the crucial penalty shootout.
Overall, Wales have lost a crucial opportunity to qualify for consecutive World Cups for the first time in their history. While all natives are gutted, there’s hardly anyone more irked than Wrexham fans for Craig Bellamy’s Nathan Broadhead omission.
