Phil Parkinson admits an early Championship red card to Callum Doyle has helped him perform well for Wrexham throughout the season.
Getting a red card is never good in football. The player gets sent off and misses the next game while his team gets brought down to 10 men on the evening. Wrexham experienced a red card in March when George Dobson was sent off in the 4-2 FA Cup defeat against Chelsea.
The subsequent three games Dobson had to sit out, were a massive struggle for the Reds. Phil Parkinson’s men kept losing more games than usual and dropped out of the top 6 with seven matches left to win it back.
Pretty sure, the last thing Wrexham would want until May is another red card for a player to ruin the season. At the same time, there are a few situations where seeing the red might do more good than harm in the long term.
Phil Parkinson admits red card helped Callum Doyle
Callum Doyle was one of the Wrexham players who got a straight red before George Dobson’s incident. Against Oxford United, Wrexham were comfortably leading 1-0 in the second half when Doyle mistimed an interception and ended up catching the U’s winger Siriki Dembele on the knee.

Simply put, it was a textbook red card foul. Managing the rest of the game was difficult for Wrexham but they dug deep to hold onto the 1-0 Oxford United win. Looking back at that moment, Phil Parkinson believes that red card served Callum Doyle well in his debut Wrexham season.
In his own words, the Leader Live quoted Parkinson saying: “We brought him in and physically he missed a lot of the pre-season work so we were playing catch-up with him and he was doing okay but then he got suspended against Oxford. That period, I feel it was a great chance for us to sit down with him and talk about what we felt he needed to do.”
Callum Doyle improved after Oxford United red card
Parkinson has got a valid point here. Earlier, every centre-back Wrexham played in the Championship was only tasked with defensive duties. Still, the Reds kept conceding a goal almost every game which called for a change.

Dom Hyam is an old school centre-back. Max Cleworth has decent pace and passing but he stays closer to Hyam whenever Wrexham go forward in numbers. Conor Coady was shaky from the get-go. 31-year-old Dan Scarr can be used as a creator defender but most players at his age struggle to complete a full season as a starter without injuries.
Parkinson eventually turned to Callum Doyle for a ball playing centre-back’s role. Five months have gone since the Oxford United game, and the former Manchester City man has never let Parkinson down ever since.
Doyle starts at the left side of the defence but operates as a typical left-back. He delivers sharp crosses into the box, plays key passes to Broadhead and Lewis O’Brien to split open defences and Doyle is a decent finisher himself.
With Doyle, Wrexham get more creativity on the left in case Issa Kabore can’t get going from the opposite flank some day. Also, it becomes easy for George Thomason to switch as a left midfielder and as a defensive midfielder between games as Doyle has got the left flank covered.
The bottom line is Callum Doyle has benefited from the Oxford United red card and the break it allowed him to take on a different role at Wrexham.
