Liverpool legend Andy Robertson is unlikely to make a summer switch to boyhood club Celtic as a free agent.
With fewer than 10 matchdays remaining, Wrexham are in the final stretch of the season. A fierce promotion battle, and potentially the playoffs, means Wrexham are already looking ahead to next season.
While this sets up excitement for the club faithful, it means focusing on their pre-existing transfer targets and goals for the management. In this regard, a latest transfer update could play a significant role in shaping Wrexham’s upcoming campaign.
Premier League veteran Andy Robertson has been one of Wrexham’s dream summer targets for quite some time now. Given that the left-back’s contract expires at the end of the season, Robertson is an ideal free agent choice for the Reds.
But the player’s Premier League pedigree has kept him on the radar of several other clubs, including Scottish giants Celtic. To Wrexham’s relief, Celtic can now be counted out of the transfer race following Pete O’Rourke’s latest assessment.
Transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke wrote in his Football Insider column: “Robertson is a boyhood Celtic fan, it’s a move that would tug on the heart strings. But I don’t think there’s any more to it than that right now.”
He added: “It does seem that Robertson and Liverpool are willing to make a decision at the end of the season and they won’t rush into anything.”
Robertson’s Celtic update gives reality check to Wrexham
Wrexham must read between the lines of Robertson’s soft denial of a Celtic move. Despite the emotional pull of a return to his boyhood club, the left-back appears to be ruling it out.
It may be a difficult truth for Wrexham fans, but if Robertson is turning down a return to his boyhood club Celtic, a move to a Championship side like Wrexham seems highly improbable.
That’s because Scottish giants like Celtic and Rangers operate on a similar model to top-six Championship clubs in their transfer market dealings. Not only do they have comparable window budgets, but they typically offer a similar wage structure for marquee signings, too.
This similarity was one of the reasons that fueled Josh Windass’s return rumours to Rangers this January.

Moving back to Andy Robertson’s case, if Wrexham fail to secure Premier League promotion this term and remain in the second tier beyond May, they can kiss goodbye to any hopes of luring Robertson over here.
Even with a comparable transfer budget, Wrexham can’t convince a Premier League veteran like Andy Robertson to drop down to the Championship. That argument gains weight when considering that the second tier can’t match the appeal of a season in the Scottish top flight.
Andy Robertson could walk into Celtic’s starting XI, win multiple domestic trophies, and remain competitive in European football for several more years. If that prospect isn’t enough to move him, it effectively eliminates any chance of him joining Wrexham to chase a Premier League promotion.
Can Wrexham still fancy a move for Andy Robertson?
As argued, Wrexham’s chances of luring Andy Robertson to the Championship are virtually nonexistent. But everything flips if the Reds secure Premier League promotion this season.
Recently, Liverpool icon Didi Hamann detailed how Wrexham can overtake mid-table Premier League sides in securing big transfer deals. This opens up a real possibility for Wrexham to bring in Robertson as a mainstay in their Premier League season roster.
Time and again, Wrexham have made significant squad upgrades upon reaching a higher tier. If the Reds reach the Premier League, it’s almost certain they will look for a few experienced stars and build the team around them with emerging Premier League talents.
In that context, Andy Robertson emerges as an ideal target for Wrexham. As a two-time Premier League winner, his experience could prove just as valuable as his performances on the pitch.
Again, Wrexham need to battle the likes of Tottenham and Atlético Madrid to land Robertson’s signature. While this makes the transfer complicated, the Reds can never be counted out.
All in all, Wrexham’s preliminary hurdle to Robertson’s signing is a Premier League promotion. Once they secure that, they’ll have the backing of co-owners Rob and Ryan’s connections to bag the marquee deal for the Premier League veteran.
