Championship stat suggests Wrexham are the masters of their own downfall with a grand total of 20 points lost from winning positions.
One by one, Wrexham are losing steam in the Championship promotion race. Last Saturday, fans didn’t mind the Norwich City defeat much for two big reasons. First of all, the Canaries threw everything on the line against Wrexham to improve their Championship status.
Norwich City were by far the best team on the pitch, and deserved more than a draw for how they restricted the Reds attack. Secondly, the Wrexham squad perhaps got way ahead of themselves with 4 straight league wins, thus, they needed a bit of a reality check in the second-tier.
However, this Leicester City draw stings to the core. The Foxes were quite thin in terms of intensity and even their late 1-1 equaliser didn’t inspire a wave of celebrations.
Clearly, Leicester City players had less desire than Norwich to go to the Racecourse and try for a win, but somehow, they also managed to ruin Wrexham’s otherwise good January form.
Wrexham’s promotion reality after 1-1 Leicester City draw
Phil Parkinson’s men did better their standings from 10th to now sitting at 9th place. But that’s the flattering side of the story. The truth is that the Red Dragons are level with Stoke City and Watford on 41 points but having played more Championship games than those two.

Compared to Wrexham’s 28 matches, Stoke City have only participated in 27 evenings. The Potters play their remaining fixture tonight vs Middlesbrough. Although Stoke City would enter that meeting as the underdogs, a draw like the previous Stoke City 0-0 Middlesbrough game is completely possible.
Should they win, it would frustrate Wrexham even further. Then, there are Watford who have 2 games in their hand over Wrexham. Their immediate clash is against lowly lying Portsmouth meaning the Reds are well destined to lose even more promotion ground than their nearest rivals.
Wrexham top Championship stat in bottling points
This miserable scenario poses a question. How bad are Wrexham at sealing games? And keeping hold of the points they should have secured comfortably.
Going by the numbers, The Athletic’s Richard Sutcliffe suggests Wrexham are the Championship’s biggest bottlers with 20 points lost from winning positions. Being a bit less generous could have fetched Wrexham at least 6-8 more points. Then, the top-6 place wouldn’t stay a pipe dream for so long among the hearts of Reds fans.

Championship fanbases love to remind success stories of bottom-table outfits making it to the playoffs against all odds. But let’s be real, it’s better to arrive inside the playoffs zone and then attempt to retain that position throughout the remaining campaign. Wrexham are just not doing that inspite of having a clear idea of how to win games one after the other.
After splitting points at home to Leicester City, Wrexham can run in either of the two scenarios. Best case, the Reds head to London to take on QPR and find their winning feet again. In this way, Wrexham can revive some Championship morale back and get to work harder for the busy February ahead.
In the worst case, the club stays winless once again in front of QPR. Fans start getting flashbacks of another mid-November like Championship crisis and this time, there is not much time left in the January transfer window to find some lineup solutions.
Feels weird to say, but Wrexham have gone back to square one in a matter of 5 days. And it’s all down to being un-clinical and clumsy in the second-half which often dictates the outcome of the game.
