‘Career will end’ – Coventry City fans laugh at Wrexham after Ben Sheaf injury

Coventry City fans are laughing at Wrexham’s misery after £6.5m summer signing Ben Sheaf’s season-ending injury on Monday.

Many Wrexham fans might have missed it, but boss Phil Parkinson was visibly elated to hear the final whistle after the 2-1 Portsmouth win. The Reds were superior to the Pompeys in the first half yet couldn’t close down the game as comfortably as they wanted.

Deep down, Parky knows that, hence, the reason for his overly satisfied reaction. Lowkey, it’s been just one game without Ben Sheaf and Wrexham’s weaknesses without the ball are well exposed. 12 more such Championship fixtures lie ahead that can make or break the playoffs push while Sheaf watches on from the sidelines.

He will be gutted to miss the best part of the season when Premier League promotions are decided. More so, when his former club Coventry City are racing to the Championship title and an automatic promotion while Wrexham still have to get over the line.

Sheaf’s injury update has also reached the ears of his former fans at Coventry City. Besides feeling sorry for him, numerous Coventry fans are laughing at Wrexham’s misery regarding the whole Ben Sheaf situation.

The most common reaction from Coventry City supporters revolves around the £6.5m transfer fee they received from Wrexham. From the Reds point of view, it was a lot of money to spend on one player but Sheaf has largely justified that seven-figure outlay.

However, the Sky Blues firmly believe they extracted a couple more millions on the Ben Sheaf deal all thanks to Wrexham’s desperation. One Coventry City fan summed up his feelings, saying: “This is like saying water is wet to a Cov fan…Ben Sheaf is injured again…standard…that’s why the deal was a bargain for us.”

Plus, wrapping up the Ben Sheaf transfer on deadline day also didn’t help. Wrexham were bound to pay more than Sheaf’s market price as a last-minute interested party. Not blaming them, because the Red Dragons added 13 new faces in the summer transfer window so they would have arrived late on one deal or the other anyway.

Another Coventry City fan couldn’t help but admit that Wrexham ran out of Sheaf’s injury luck at last. He said: “A move to Made of Glass FC would have been better for him. Class on his day but will always miss 10+ games a season due to injury.”

His claim isn’t wrong. Sheaf was often on the sidelines for 10-12 games per season even in his Coventry City days. So far, he had missed only 3 competitive evenings for Phil Parkinson’s men and as such, the next 10 week absence balances his injury track record.

Being only 28 years old, Ben Sheaf finds himself in a terrible injury situation. At this age, most elite Championship players are able to see out strong individual campaigns with as fewer as 5 games missed due to rotations and minor knocks.

Another Coventry City fan fears the long-term side effects of Ben Sheaf’s recurring injuries. He added: “A good player on his day for us (Cov) but have a feeling his career will end a little earlier than most. Have never known such an injury prone player.”

Wrexham won’t require Sheaf to play a key role in the midfield till his retirement, that’s for sure. But 2-3 impressive years will be hoped from the Arsenal academy graduate. Let’s hope Sheaf remains as much injury-proof as he can in the upcoming campaigns.
