EFL drops shocking announcement for Wrexham if they don’t get promoted

Wrexham

The EFL has dropped a shocking announcement for Wrexham if the Red Dragons don’t get promoted to the Premier League.

Every Wrexham fan and their dog knows the club’s obsession with wrapping promotions and going higher in the football league ladder. The Reds ultimate goal has always revolved around the Premier League, with the previous three promotions being the gradual baby steps needed to climb towards top-flight football.

Knowing how frequently the back-to-back-to-back phrase is used to refer Wrexham, it would be perfectly fitting if the fourth one also comes consecutively on the bounce. Reaching the Premier League will no doubt go down as a golden day in Wrexham football club’s history, but there are other benefits as well that come with it.

Just look at Sunderland, they were Championship mid-table boys around 2024 May and will probably finish mid-table in the Premier League by 2026 May. Apart from it, Sunderland have been able to recruit world class talent in their ranks all thanks to the financial advantages of hailing from the Premier League.

In seven months, the same could be Wrexham’s reality with a potential Premier League schedule at hand. No matter whom the Reds play, the Dragons fanbase will flock in huge numbers for Wrexham’s first Premier League game, hopefully in August.

EFL drop shocking announcement for Wrexham

Now, let’s turn to the unpleasant side of the coin. Without being promoted, Wrexham will have no Premier League season opener on their table. That’s for sure. Plus, EFL has already planned a shock for Wrexham if they await another season of Championship football.

Just yesterday, the EFL released an early sneak peek into the 2026/27 season’s first matchday dates. Now, Wrexham fans will ask when does the next Championship season start?

Unlike the current one which started on the 9th August weekend, the 2026/27 second tier campaign will roll out from 14th August. The 5-6 days gap is due to the Carabao Cup, which will commence from 7th August itself.

Meaning unlike other regular seasons, the squads languishing in the Championship with the hope to one day make it into the Premier League will have to handle Cup games before the league fixtures.

In other words, the first round of the Carabao Cup will be treated as a significant preseason friendly. After all, no football club in the country opts for a strong lineup in Cup competition unless and until it’s the semi-finals or the finals stage.

Wrexham need PL promotion to avoid Carabao Cup opener

From a Wrexham fan’s point of view, it’s a dumb move from the EFL. Already various Premier League and a bunch of ambitious Championship teams are brushing aside the knockout Cup games from their priorities. Then, shifting the first round of the Carabao Cup just after preseason ends makes the tournament even more irrelevant.

The situation for Wrexham is crystal clear. Go to the Premier League and start the league first, then focus attention to Cup games in between. Else, the Carabao Cup campaign will start before the league fixtures and probably end beforehand as well.

Carabao Cup could become another EFL Trophy

After all, there is the magic of the Carabao Cup just like it’s with the FA Cup. However, the tournament’s essence is losing day by day. Nowadays, Carabao Cup round 1 and even round 2 games mean Premier League and second tier teams rest about 5-8 players on average.

In the future, the number can easily become 9-10. That implies playing youth players, academy talents alongside giving a last chance to any experienced veterans who are past their prime.

Isn’t this the description of an EFL Trophy? The EFL Trophy contains top-flight regulars sending their U21 sides to play senior opposition from League 1 and League 2. Should the EFL keep shifting the Carabao Cup in the early weeks of the season, very soon fans and clubs alike will start calling the Carabao Cup as another form of the EFL Trophy that holds slightly more prestige.
