Elliot Lee’s Wrexham career is all but over with January update

Elliot Lee

Elliot Lee’s Wrexham career is all but over beyond the ongoing January transfer window. Phil Parkinson has dropped an update on Lee which every Wrexham fan saw coming.

Since hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have set foot in Wrexham, the Red Dragons first era is about to be over. Multiple key players like Paul Mullin, Ollie Palmer, Steven Fletcher and Ben Tozer among others, who once formed the core of this team have become fringe squad members in recent times.

A number of former players like Steven Fletcher, Ben Tozer and Ben Foster have bid farewell to the sport. Some like Ollie Palmer and Eoghan O’Connell still keep playing in the EFL divisions, with the latter recently facing Liverpool in FA Cup action upon joining his new team Barnsley.

Although Super Paul Mullin still remains on the club’s books, it’s clear as day that his story at Wrexham is nearing its end. The next one following him out is almost certain as well, Elliot Lee.

Wrexham fans know Lee has been deemed surplus to requirements since December, with another veteran Jay Rodriguez grabbing up the 25th man spot instead. Just like Mullin’s exit thoughts, Parkinson has dropped the ultimatum on Lee’s Wrexham days.

As quoted by the Leader Live, Parkinson insisted: “There’s several clubs that want to take Elliot on loan so he’s just getting himself ready for that but he’s not far off it because he’s back in training.”

Well, 19-year-old midfield sensation Harry Ashfield also has clubs lining up in numbers to take him but in Lee’s case, the decision will arrive sooner rather than later. While concluding, Parky also added: “He trained really well (on Monday) and he wants to go and play somewhere, so we’ll respect that and give him the opportunity.”

Elliot Lee’s Wrexham career

In 2022, Elliot Lee joined a non-league Wrexham team from the then Championship side Luton Town. Dropping three divisions down was always going to be an easy adaptation period for Lee. The same happened as the attacking midfielder exceeded expectations at the Racecourse.

Over the following 3 campaigns, Lee bagged a grand total of 40 goals in Wrexham’s colours and helped Phil Parkinson’s men pull a string of 3 back-to-back-to-back promotions. Talking about Lee’s best Wrexham highlight moment, nothing tops his 1-1 equaliser to set the stage for a 3-1 Boreham Wood comeback win and guarantee direct promotion to League Two.

In League Two, Lee enjoyed his best scoring season with 16 league goals. The 31-year-old’s output did take a gradual hit since then. Still, a goal against Hull City followed by a sublime assist vs Preston North End in this season’s Carabao Cup will be cherished for a long, long time among the Red Dragons faithful.

Who knows, Lee was Wrexham’s lucky charm for the Carabao Cup? After all, the Reds were sent packing from the Cup competition against Cardiff City, which was the only game Lee didn’t play.

What next for Elliot Lee after Wrexham?

For the record, Elliot Lee has played above Championship level unlike the vast majority of Wrexham players. Being a West Ham academy graduate, Lee lined up for the Hammers in the Premier League as well as the Europa League, albeit for a handful of games.

These days, Lee’s former employers West Ham are caught up in a Premier League relegation fight of their own. Most likely, they will be handed a Championship status come May, but even then, Lee rejoining West Ham is a mild possibility based on his injury ridden 2025/26 season.

Perhaps, Lee might think of a West Ham homecoming in any coaching role many years down the line. But as a player, he still has goals and a valuable experience to offer to League One and League Two clubs.

High aiming League One and League Two sides like Swindon Town, Huddersfield Town, Cardiff City only to name a few, can be Lee’s next destination.

Can Lee or Mullin, or both, join hands with Ollie Palmer’s promotion fighting Swindon Town? It can happen. But one thing is for sure. Wrexham fans will love to see the trio running the clock and putting another goal-laden season together, this time away from Wrexham.
