Ollie Palmer and Swindon Town have been expelled from the EFL Trophy competition for their breach of EFL regulations of fielding ineligible players.
Ever since the transfer window saw its conclusion, Wrexham strikers have been grabbing the headlines across the English divisions. And surprisingly, the contributions from departed players outweigh those from current ones.
Among the current crop of attackers, Sam Smith’s name has been swirling for Wrexham’s ungrateful treatment of him. Despite 4 goals in 4 recent starts, the PFA-nominated striker has been reduced to the bench again.
While Smith’s exclusion is beyond his control, former Wrexham attackers have no one to blame but themselves. After Elliot Lee’s standoff with Phil Parkinson and Wrexham, another club hero finds himself in the spotlight for unwanted reasons.
The player in discussion is Ollie Palmer, as his side, Swindon Town, has been expelled from the EFL Trophy 2025/26 campaign.
This follows after Swindon Town had got the better of Luton Town with a 2-1 win in the Round of 16. However, the club’s breach of EFL protocol has resulted in them kicked out of the Vertu competition in a recent development.
Sky Sports confirmed Swindon’s expulsion: “Swindon Town have been kicked out of the EFL Trophy for fielding ineligible players and other aggravating factors. Luton Town will take their place in the quarters and will face Plymouth in the competition.”
Swindon Town’s bizarre elimination
As detailed in the Sky Sports report, the primary reason for Swindon’s marching orders has been their questionable player deployment. This stems from the League Two outfit using two ineligible players, Ollie Clark & Aaron Drinan, to beat Luton Town.
Firstly, Ollie Clark was given the go-ahead to lead the side despite being in suspension. Having committed a violent offence in a previous Carabao Cup game against Cardiff, Clark was penalised with a 7-game ban due to disciplinary action.

With the EFL Trophy Round of 16 taking place in mid-January, Ollie Clark was ineligible to participate. Fielding him for the majority of the game for 77 minutes asked for a penalty imposition for Swindon.
If the initial incident was peculiar, the succeeding event involving Drinan was markedly more anomalous. In an inexcusable error, Swindon put a matchday absentee’s name instead of the actually featured Aaron Drinan.
Notably, Ollie Palmer was the one whose substitution paved the way for Drinan’s second-half spell. While Palmer’s continuation wouldn’t have saved Swindon, the punishment could have been lenient and may not have been a complete expulsion from the Vertu Trophy.
Ollie Palmer sees EFL Trophy double dream crash again
Despite being a back-to-back-to-back promotion winner with Wrexham, Ollie Palmer’s trophy cabinet has been limited. The last time he lifted a title was back in the 2017/18 season in a Football League Trophy victory(also known as the EFL Trophy) with Lincoln City.
While Palmer came close to an EFL Trophy double with Wrexham last season, the striker saw his dream crash before his eyes. Having been left out of the squad, the forward helplessly witnessed the Reds’ defeat to Peterborough in the Semi-Finals.
This time, Ollie had a serious chance at a deep Trophy run given Swindon’s blistering form. With the side in contention for a League One promotion, Palmer has stood out with 9 goals scored in total.
Having played a part in Swindon’s Round of 16 win over Luton, Palmer was scheduled to play against League One strugglers Plymouth. However, the club’s careless blunders have them kicked out of the competition, with an inferior team in Luton taking their spot in the competition.
Previously expected to fancy their way in a deep Trophy run, Swindon Town’s campaign has been cut short. While Palmer could’ve repeated the feat of winning the EFL Trophy with a League Two outfit, Swindon’s kick-out guarantees a League One winner with 8 third-tier sides remaining.
