‘Smooth’ – Ipswich Town boss fancies beating Wrexham despite FA Cup loss

Ipswich Town

Wrexham defeated Ipswich Town 1-0 in the FA Cup 4th round. Despite that, Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna fancies beating Wrexham on the weekend.

Wrexham have kicked off February on an encouraging note with an FA Cup win and a Championship defeat so far. The Reds have 4 more games awaiting them this month starting from tomorrow’s away trip to face Bristol City.

Championship rivals sitting closer to Wrexham have made this Wrexham vs Bristol City clash a must win game for Phil Parkinson’s men to regain control of their top 6 position. Four days later, the Ipswich Town rematch will take place at the Racecourse. At home, the Red Dragons got the better of Kieran McKenna’s men thanks to Josh Windass FA Cup winner last weekend.

That result won’t have gone down well in the Ipswich Town camp. Knowing their automatic promotion ambitions, losing to any Championship rival below them would be considered a humiliation for the Blues.

The chance for a Wrexham payback is still alive, though. Consequently, this Ipswich Town side will turn up to the Racecourse with vengeful eyes in 4 days. And their boss, Kieran McKenna fancies beating Wrexham there.

Kieran McKenna fancies beating Wrexham despite FA Cup loss

Kieran McKenna is often hailed as one of the best managers across the 2025/26 Championship season. Hence, it’s unusual to find him complaining after a defeat. Still, McKenna did point out the fact that the Ipswich Town team he started in the FA Cup wasn’t the full strength lineup available at his disposal.

In his own words, the East Anglian Daily Times quoted McKenna saying: “There were some positives in there, but when you have a lot of people in a team either getting first minutes for a while or a first start for a while or playing in different partnerships, not everything is going to be smooth.”

Clearly, McKenna is talking about the makeshift defence he lined up against Wrexham. Neither club captain Dara O’Shea was there nor in-form fullbacks Leif Davis and Darnell Furlong. That says why Ipswich Town were quite porous in the first half whenever Wrexham attacked in numbers.

How many changes Ipswich Town will make vs Wrexham?

Kieran McKenna rotation excuse brings up the question. How many changes will Ipswich Town make in the Championship clash against Wrexham? Especially, when their second-tier automatic promotion is on the line and they haven’t tasted a single victory over Phil Parkinson’s men in 2 games across this season.

To estimate that, let’s start from the goalkeeper position. Christian Walton has been handed more preference this season at Ipswich Town. He will be expected to take back his gloves from Alex Palmer who nearly gave away a second minute goal to Wrexham in the FA Cup.

The rested trinity of Dara O’Shea, Leif Davis and Darnell Furlong will walk back into the Blues defence. Azor Matusiwa will be a firm candidate to displace Dan Neil at the base of midfield. As Marcelinho Nunez is nursing an injury at the moment, Anis Mehmeti will head to the No. 10 role which Sindre Walle Egeli assumed vs Wrexham.

Lastly, McKenna can turn to Jack Clarke for the left wing spot where he has troubled second-tier defences with 12 goals to his name across all competitions. That makes it 7 potential changes for Ipswich Town for the Wrexham clash on the coming Saturday.

Back in November, the Tractor Boys started 5 of these 7 players when Wrexham toured them and the result was a balanced 0-0 draw. Phil Parkinson’s men will want to aim higher for the three points but a draw might work well should they sweep a comfortable win tomorrow against Bristol City.
