Ex-Wrexham captain James McClean’s response to Windass’ post puts his Rangers transfer links to bed once and forever.
It’s already been two days and counting, but James McClean’s departure from Wrexham is still taking its toll on fans. While the majority may have moved ahead of McClean, the player, the reality of McClean, the Captain’s exit, is sinking in gradually.
That’s because of the surreal bond the Wrexham faithful had with Jimmy. Having fallen in love with his leader version while enjoying his shithousery plays against nasty rivals, McClean’s transfer has hit the fanbase hard.
Not only does his return to Derry come as an emotional separation for the fans, but it’s been a hard time for his teammates as well. Evidently, the period of recounting their best moments with the club Captain goes on as McClean settles into life at Derry again.
In a heartfelt message, Josh Windass recently recounted his first interaction with James McClean, posting: “What a guy @macajw. Been top ever since I joined, to say you was scared of me initially and now we’re good pals! All the best brother”
James McClean and Rangers’ animosity
While Windass’ post feels like a cheeky interaction that’s common among teammates, it reveals James McClean and Rangers’ animosity. With Windass arriving as a former Gers player, such a hostile welcome from McClean is extremely normal for the relationship he shares with Rangers.
Having been a devout Catholic, McClean’s bitterness towards the Scottish club stems from political reasons. Given the dark past between Ireland and the United Kingdom, James McClean refuses to wear a poppy or support unionist values, which form the core of Rangers’ principles.

A part of his animosity for the Gers comes from his love and fandom for Celtic, who are Rangers’ old rivals.
For the character he is, James McClean didn’t respond to Windass’ post emotionally. Instead, he turned it into a banter on Rangers, saying: “I think you hate Rangers more than me(with laughing emojis and a Celtic four-leaf clover).”
McClean’s jab puts Windass Rangers’ links to bed
With Captain McClean placing a last off-field assist for Wrexham, Josh Windass’ stay is confirmed now. While the last few weeks had the rumour fading, McClean has put the final nail in the coffin by revealing what Windass feels for the Gers.
Notably, the root cause of the prolonged Josh Wingass to Rangers saga lay in his relationship with ex-boss Danny Rohl. Otherwise, a reunion possibility wouldn’t even emerge after Windass shushed Rangers fans while being at the club, once.
Even otherwise, Rangers’ interest in Windass was likely to be buried given the flying high form they’re in under Rohl’s leadership. Being on a 6-game winning streak, the Gers are having one of their best spells in a considerable time.
Apart from the sporting aspect, Rangers didn’t hesitate in hinting at their decreasing interest in Josh Windass with Tuur Rommens’ signing. Already constrained in transfer budgets, Rangers’ financial power wouldn’t allow them to spend big on Windass after a £3m purchase of Rommens.
While this behind-the-scenes buildup was moving towards Windass’ Wrexham stay, James McClean’s post has dropped the ultimate verdict. And in his signature style again, for the out and loud character he is and always will be.
