‘Out of the blue’ – Paul Mullin echoes same Wrexham feelings as Elliot Lee

Paul Mullin

Wrexham club hero Paul Mullin lets out his suffering in the same way as Elliot Lee did in burning bridges with Phil Parkinson and fans.

After a successful spell of wins and impressive debuts, Wrexham’s halcyon days are nearing an end. While a turbulent chapter awaits, it’s coming down at once for the Reds on all fronts.

On the field, Wrexham’s 3-game unbeaten streak has been breached as Millwall return the favour to the Reds with a 2-0 away win. The off-field chapter is even more chaotic, as another club legend has opted to publicly disparage Phil Parkinson.

Having barely recovered from the Elliot Lee saga after he burned the bridges with Parky, comes Paul Mullin’s case. While Lee at least didn’t directly aim at his former gaffer in his media address, Mullin has expressed his heartfelt feelings clearly.

The Bradford forward opened up about his struggles in the last 18 months of his stay on Wrexham’s financial books. As quoted by BBC Sport Wales, Mullin said: “It’s something I’ve found quite challenging over the last 18 months. It was sort out of the blue, after everything that I’ve done.”

Paul Mullin’s 18-month claim paints an incomplete picture

With a mammoth 110 goals scored for Wrexham since the club’s takeover, Paul Mullin has been one of the finest and most celebrated club legends. Having been sensational in the lower tiers, Mullin almost single-handedly fired Wrexham to League One.

For all his contributions, Mullin remains very appreciated among the Wrexham faithful. However, his claim isn’t substantiated, for he was given ample time to continue his mavericks before being left out altogether.

Wrexham had started the 2024/25 League One season with Paul Mullin being an important striking figure. Though a backup to Ollie Palmer initially, the Liverudlian was given as many as 26 appearances in the first half of the previous season.

However, Mullin looked a shadow of his usual League Two and lower-tier performances. In contrast to his previous scoring proficiency, Mullin could only manage three goals in 26 league games before being left out for better options in Sam Smith and others.

Undeniably, the last 18 months have been tough for him as he’s fallen from the pinnacle of Wrexham’s attack force. But surely it was not something that popped completely out of the blue for him.

Mullin’s League One game time proves that Wrexham trusted him despite his mediocre third-tier track record. He was given enough time to prove his worth in the higher divisions, making his claim paint an incomplete picture of the real story.

Wrexham legends should learn from McClean’s graceful exit

Be it Elliot Lee or Paul Mullin, both have been pioneers of Wrexham’s modern-day success. However, their recent actions have only served to taint their long and hard-earned legacy among the club faithful.

On the other hand, comes a graceful farewell like that of former James McClean. Perhaps the other club legends should take a page from their ex-captain’s book on executing a flawless exit.

Having lost his spot to Liberato Cacace and George Thomason, James McClean didn’t complain and played his part in the limited opportunities he got this season. Despite being the most accomplished player in Wrexham’s Championship roster, he didn’t let his ego affect the club.

Ultimately, when he knew his job was done at Wrexham, McClean made a memorable exit by bidding a heartwarming farewell to the fans. This is something other club heroes need to learn how to leave gracefully without burning bridges with the club and fans.

With both Elliot Lee and Paul Mullin’s contracts expiring this summer, the duo is touted to leave the Racecourse. But undoubtedly they would leave in a manner unworthy of the respect they once commanded.
