Former Wrexham Captain James McClean’s move was inspired by his brother Patrick’s Derry return amidst the club’s title dream.
James McClean’s Derry City return rumours had been buzzing around the Racecourse for the last couple of months. Despite being aware of his impending move, the Captain’s transfer came in a flash for Wrexham.
Keeping aside the sentimental aspect and emotions, the timing of McClean’s whirlwind transfer raises questions.
Logically, the most rational departure for James McClean could have been bidding bye at the end of the season by completing his contract. While a promotion would’ve made it even more iconic, otherwise too, it ought to be the perfect heroic exit for McClean’s legacy.
Turns out, it was the cumulative effort of multiple details falling in place together that fueled the move. While a homecoming is always special, these reasons show the urgency of James McClean’s timely move.
Patrick McClean’s January Derry City return
Notably, James McClean isn’t the only professional footballer in his family hierarchy. Joined by his younger brother in the occupation, Patrick McClean chose to follow in James’ footsteps.
Like Jimmy, Patrick also began his career at their local hometown club, Derry City. However, the latter’s trajectory turned out to be quite underwhelming compared to what James achieved himself.

Pinged by mental health issues, Patrick had also taken retirement as early as just being 26 years old. But the love of the sport pulled him back just 5 months later.
Though James McClean’s career has been the illustrious and renowned one, Patrick’s spell portrays the challenging trajectory of a footballing career. Better late than never, younger McClean gave himself a real shot at sporting success by joining Derry City this January.
What Wrexham fans and everyone else saw was older brother, James McClean, joining in just a day later than Patrick re-arrived at Derry. Always destined to finish his career at his hometown club, McClean didn’t let the opportunity pass to play alongside his brother Patrick for the first time.
Recently, journalist Markel quoted the reunion picture perfectly on X(formerly Twitter), saying: “McClean, after 15 years, returns with his brother to Derry—he had it tattooed.”
McClean’s trophy ambition at Derry played a part in return
What makes James McClean’s full-career moment even more special is his longing for a title on his return. His inaugural media address back at Derry had his ambition clear: “If I was to win a League title here and go out in that way I couldn’t write the script any better”.
Notably, McClean’s first and only title win at Derry came when he helped the club get promoted to the Premier Division in his initial career days. Now, the Irish legend has the opportunity once again to end Derry’s title drought in style.
Ever since going up the Top Flight in 2010, Derry City has never stamped their authority as the League winners. Though they have had multiple runner-up finishes recently, the title dream remains unaccomplished.
In 2025, Derry came as close as a 3-point margin to Shamrock Rovers, only to finish second. Now, the responsibility lies with their local icon, James McClean and his younger brother, Patrick, to deliver the title.
Whether Jimmy gets the perfect sendoff with a Premier Division title remains to be seen, but he’s bound to go down as the biggest Derry messiah for sure. Bidding bye to his Wrexham spell, McClean’s return to fulfil Derry’s dream says it all for his love for the local fans and family.
