Wrexham set for 4 matches in 11 days after Championship announcement

Wrexham are set for 4 matches in 11 days during March after the latest Championship announcement regarding the rescheduled Watford game.

Wrexham are back at the Racecourse tomorrow with a tricky Championship test against Portsmouth. Four days later, a Charlton Athletic clash also awaits the Reds in London meaning there is hardly any time for Phil Parkinson’s men to relax in February.

Championship schedules are often known to become cumbersome around the business end of the season. And Wrexham are about to experience it the hectic way, which is mainly down to the Reds FA Cup successes. Make no mistake, the Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town FA Cup wins were pleasant evenings but every positive has a negative attached to it.

Firstly, the Ipswich Town FA Cup fixture on 10th Feb congested the tight league schedule for Wrexham in the final 2 weeks of February. The same will happen with the 11th March FA Cup tie vs Chelsea, as the Reds will be thrown many Championship games on the bounce without having enough time to reset and recover.

Wrexham vs Watford Championship announcement

The Championship announcement regarding Wrexham’s busy March schedule has arrived. Phil Parkinson’s men were slated to begin the month vs Chelsea in the FA Cup and then take on top 4 side Hull City alongwith mid-table rivals Swansea City and Sheffield United in quick succession.

Now, the previously postponed Watford showdown has also been thrown in the mix. In their own words, Watford announced this Championship update saying: “Watford’s home game with Wrexham in the Sky Bet Championship has been rescheduled for Tuesday March 17 with kick-off at 7:45pm.”

With that, Wrexham now have a Watford game sandwiched between the Swansea City and Sheffield United games. Coincidentally, the Reds faced these three teams back-to-back in the first half of the season although the order was slightly different.

Watford was the first game of the set, where injury returnee Ollie Rathbone smashed a last-minute 2-2 equaliser to kickstart his as well as Wrexham’s Championship comeback.

Wrexham set for 4 matches in 11 days in March

Coming to the main worry for Wrexham, it’s this 4 game run in 11 days during March. For the first week of March, there’s only a Chelsea game to look out for where a win will be nothing short of an FA Cup miracle. Beyond that, there are home dates against Hull City on 10th March and Swansea City on 13th March.

Further, there are two away visits at Watford and Sheffield United on the 17th and 21st March respectively. Overall, that’s the breakdown of this four game gruelling run Wrexham are about to enter soon. Travel won’t be a big issue for the team as the home games and away games aren’t mixed together.

Still, 4 games within 2 weeks is a daunting task. Of course, Wrexham played through a similarly busy schedule during the festive period in December and January and came unscathed out of it with 4 consecutive wins.

However, the quality of teams is much difficult this time around. Hull City are firmly fighting for the promotion goal, Watford are down but definitely not out of the top 6 race at the moment. Swansea City and Sheffield United have also looked well-drilled in the recent Championship matchdays.

As such, getting 2 wins and 2 draws, or any combination of unbeaten results will be dubbed a good result for Phil Parkinson’s playoffs hopefuls. After all, all four of the above teams will gain a playoffs edge on Wrexham should they defeat the Reds. Wrexham won’t wish that to happen.

Another factor the Red Dragons won’t wish for is injuries. Without Matty James, the team lacks calmness in the midfield whenever the game heats up. If someone like Lewis O’Brien or in-form man Josh Windass also pick up an injury, Wrexham’s chance creation will also take a massive hit.

Had the FA Cup Chelsea game fallen between these 4 outings, then Phil Parkinson will have an easy task on his hands. Rotate the starting lineup for the FA Cup evening, and prioritize gaining maximum Championship points from the 4 league games. That’s not the case, so let’s see how does Wrexham approach this hectic March calendar.
