Wrexham are closing on budget striker Davis Keillor-Dunn’s signing ahead of the January transfer deadline day.
The January transfer deadline day comes in 3 days and Wrexham fans have started to grow excited over it. A flurry of star Championship strikers from Adam Armstrong to Sammie Szmodics have been linked to the Reds in recent days which definitely increases winter spending expectations among the fanbase.
So far, Wrexham have only bagged Bristol City’s reliable centre-back Zak Vyner. Cash was never going to be a problem for those at the Racecourse, and snapping Vyner without paying a premium shows the Reds are well positioned to splash big on a new striker.
Except, Wrexham have played it safe by going for a budget alternative to provide more depth in the No.9 ranks.
Davis Keillor-Dunn set for Wrexham return in January
Among the many forwards Wrexham kept an eye for, Davis Keillor-Dunn was the most familiar face in the club’s eyes. The in-form 28-year-old had wore the Reds colours before Phil Parkinson’s arrival but didn’t get to play much in those days.
Now, Davis Keillor-Dunn is closing in on an emotional return to his former club Wrexham. In their own words, All About League One pointed out on X(formerly Twitter): “Wrexham are set to complete the signing of 28 year old Barnsley forward Davis Keillor-Dunn.”

Watching this update, some fans will feel upset who were gearing up to welcome a big name striker in North Wales. Davis Keillor-Dunn doesn’t match the same star forward profile, but his League One exploits shouldn’t be underestimated. Halfway through the 2025/26 season, Davis has led the goalscoring charts in the third tier with his 18 strikes.
Davis Keillor-Dunn can be a grand success at Wrexham
The fact that Davis has toyed with League One defences is good to hear. But how good can he do at Wrexham in the Championship and beyond? To be honest, it’s difficult to guess Keillor-Dunn’s ceiling in the second tier because he hasn’t played football at this level before.
At the same time, this unpredictability can help Davis rack up bags of goals at the Racecourse. It’s no secret that Adam Armstrong and Sammie Szmodics were the other striker alternatives Wrexham were weighing up. In the case of Armstrong, his disastrous Premier League career is well known despite him being an elite Championship finisher.

Overall, Armstrong has stayed in the Premier League for 3 seasons but hasn’t got going in even one of them. Now, approaching the age of 30 it’s highly unlikely that the current Southampton striker can turn a corner in the top-flight once Wrexham gets there. As for Szmodics, the only brilliant phase of his Championship career came in the 23/24 campaign.
Rest, the Irish forward has never delivered a sharp season in front of goal in the second tier. Can Wrexham take it for granted that the Szmodics signing will go to plan? Simple answer, No.
Moreover, Davis Keillor-Dunn has come for cheap than both Armstrong and Szmodics would ever. Consequently, there won’t be much spotlight on Davis to start every match and score goals from the get go. That kind of pressure often prevents big money deals from becoming a success.
As an added advantage, Davis was enjoying a strong individual as well as collective season in League One. Neither Armstrong nor Szmodics has had this luxury since the past 6 months, which says that Davis can translate his current purple patch better to Wrexham than the other two transfer targets.
