Wrexham have dropped the third January transfer announcement in the same week. Rising defender Max Purvis is the latest Reds name to leave Phil Parkinson’s camp.
The year 2026 is unfolding to be a joyous one for Wrexham, with 3 out of 3 victories coming across all competitions. While going unbeaten throughout a calendar year is next to impossible, the Reds can pass January with a full winning record if they maintain their mojo for three more weeks.
Also, that’s the same timeframe left in the ongoing transfer market. To the fans surprise, Wrexham have refrained from any transfer discussions till now, with the club’s latest act being dismissing a Max Cleworth rumour in the early stages.
During the January period, the Red Dragons always went on a shopping spree in the preceding years. But hey, the current first team is flying high on a 5 game winning streak, so why fix anything when it ain’t broke?
There is a slight downside for a winning run, tho. Young players don’t get their chance to make their mark in men’s football and are subsequently sent out for their career’s greater good.
Wrexham announced Eoghan O’Connell and Jake Bickerstaff exits before
Wrexham have begun this talent offloading work since this week started. The club has already spread the word about experienced defender Eoghan O’Connell finding a new home at Barnsley to see out this season.
As well as sending their positive words to prodigy striker Jake Bickerstaff to hit the ground running in the best way possible at new club Cheltenham Town. Jake is not the only wonderkid axed out to shape the Wrexham squad, another talented teammate has also been given his marching orders out of the Racecourse.
Wrexham confirm third transfer announcement of the week
Announcing rising centre-back Max Purvis departure, Wrexham’s official X account (formerly Twitter) wrote: “We can confirm that young professional Max Purvis has joined Flint Town United on loan until the end of the 2025/26 season.”
Hailing from Liverpool, it’s natural for Max Purvis to idolise playing for clubs like Everton and Liverpool who are well established sides at Premier League level. However, the bitter truth at Wrexham is that even current star defender Max Cleworth had to make it big in his loan spell.
Otherwise, Cleworth wouldn’t be languishing above the then Reds level, which was non-league football. Simply put, the 23 year old Englishman’s starting days at Wrexham only arrived due to a good campaign as a loanee.
And now, see Cleworth is at a stage in his playing career when the rumours of Aston Villa being interested in him aren’t completely vague despite Phil Parkinson clarifying the truth. Taking inspiration from Cleworth, Purvis needs to take utmost care of his form and fitness. That is the way forward for the teenage prospect.
Who can leave Wrexham next in January?
The biggest favourite to leave the Wrexham camp is Harry Ashfield. The 19 year old made the leap to the senior side in the early phase of the season but with Josh Windass and Ollie Rathbone miles ahead of him in the No.10 role, a temporary exit lies in Ashfield’s best interests.
Recently, League Two relegation fighters Bristol Rovers lodged a firm interest in Ashfield. Without any last-minute deal breakers, it’s very much likely that Ashfield will conclude this 2025/26 campaign in the Gas ranks.
In five months, a fair expectation for the Welshman should be to bag atleast 5+ goal contributions and fend off relegation fears building up at Rovers. After that, Ashfield can work to grab a League One loan for the forthcoming season.
Why another League One stint if the Rovers one meets expectations? Well, Wrexham’s squad gets more competitive with every passing summer, hence, Ashfield must prove himself on a couple of loans in different places to make the cut at the Racecourse.
Let’s see how Ashfield’s future development goes.
