Wrexham are eyeing £9m Championship flop Sammie Szmodics as a striker target for the January transfer window. He won the Golden Boot previously in the second tier.
Transfer window is never a smooth sailing journey. Wrexham must be realising this fact at present. In the past 24 hours, the Reds have been dealt significant transfer blows with Sidiki Cherif limping off injured in training.
Then, it became clear that 11 goal Championship striker Adam Armstrong is getting rival transfer interest across the second tier. Every Wrexham fan had expected the club to hold an upper hand to choose between these two strikers. Suddenly, the ball is not in the Red Dragons court anymore.
Now, call it a panic move but Wrexham are shifting their striker attention again in this January transfer window. Apparently, the club’s hierarchy fears that boss Phil Parkinson might need to rely on more attacking support towards the business end of the season. As such, a £9m Championship flop has also entered the Wrexham transfer rumour mill in recent hours.
Wrexham eyeing Sammie Szmodics January signing
In his own words, journalist Pete O’Rourke dropped an update on Wrexham’s striker search: “Wrexham have joined Derby in the race for Ipswich Town forward Sammie Szmodics.”
Upon hearing this, a few Reds fans might be delighted with the club’s pursuit of an attacker from the Championship’s current top 3 clubs. However, the reality isn’t that pleasing in Sammie Szmodics case. Rewinding back to the 2023/24 Championship season, Sammie Szmodics won the league’s Golden Boot with 27 goals.

Adam Armstrong was his closest rival with 21 goals back then. This stat says why Wrexham have turned to Szmodics upon sensing Middlesbrough’s willingness to prize away Adam Armstrong to Riverside. Plus, Szmodics netted 2 goals to inspire his former club Blackburn Rovers to a 4-1 FA Cup win over Wrexham the very same season.
Thus, the Reds have more reasons to appreciate the Irishman’s finishing talent. Following the 2023/24 campaign, Sammie Szmodics was tipped to command a massive transfer fee in the summer. That eventually happened, with then Premier League outfit Ipswich Town shelling out £9m to secure Szmodics services for the top-flight.
Fast forward to 18 months, and Szmodics has grown into a benchwarmer’s role at Ipswich with only 5 goals scored for Kieran McKenna’s men so far. The worst part? Only a single strike has come from Szmodics boot in Ipswich Town’s current promotion cause.
2 risks with Wrexham signing Sammie Szmodics
As seen above, it’s crystal clear that Sammie Szmodics has gone through a horrible time at Ipswich Town for the past two seasons running. That suggests, Wrexham can attempt to talk down Szmodics asking price should they plan to go all out for his signing. Still, the Reds must factor in 2 massive risks that come with taking the 30-year-old striker onto their books.

First of all, Szmodics is a bit like a one season wonder in Championship football. None of his other 4 second tier campaigns has seen him bag even ten goals which makes it more riskier to count on him for gaining promotion from the Championship.
The second red flag with signing Sammie Szmodics is his injury track record. Across his struggling Ipswich Town career, Szmodics has missed over 40 games owing to a poor health bill and his fitness levels might deteriorate with age. Already being a 30-year-old striker, Szmodics prime years could well be behind him.
Surely, Wrexham won’t wish to accumulate another ageing forward in their ranks while the futures of Paul Mullin, Elliot Lee and Jay Rodriguez are up in the air. Will the Reds continue chasing Sammie Szmodics despite these transfer risks, let’s see.
