Wrexham have been handed another FA Cup blow after Chelsea drew Port Vale in the quarter-finals days after edging out Wrexham 4-2 in the last 16.
Wrexham started their 2025/26 FA Cup campaign over two months ago in January. Back then, the Reds were widely expected to fall at the first hurdle against Nottingham Forest. However, Phil Parkinson’s men never stopped trying and eventually nailed a 4-3 penalties win following a six-goal thriller in regulation time.
Then Ipswich Town were another tough test but Josh Windass solo strike dragged Wrexham onto the last 16. Likewise, the Reds never bowed down to Chelsea until they were brought down to 10 men and the Blues found the back of the net twice in extra time.
Wrexham’s special 2025/26 FA Cup run
All in all, this FA Cup run will go down in Wrexham’s history books for multiple reasons. Firstly, the current squad came within touching distance of the coveted FA Cup quarter finals feat that had only been reached once at Wrexham during the 1977/78 season.
Secondly, Wrexham surpassed multiple Premier League clubs’ FA Cup finishes including the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspurs, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace. This achievement would have felt a far fetched dream until a few years back.

A few days ago, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney also joined in praising Wrexham for delivering a Champions League semifinal worthy night in the 4-2 Chelsea defeat. Three days have gone since then, Wrexham have exited the FA Cup but somewhere, fans will wonder whether this Cup story could have panned out any sweeter than this.
Chelsea draw Port Vale in FA Cup quarter finals
Following the last 16 matchups, the FA Cup quarter finals draw took place yesterday. Manchester City were paired with Liverpool in a glamorous FA Cup showdown but Chelsea’s draw will interest Wrexham fans more.
After all, Phil Parkinson’s men would be sitting in Chelsea’s position had they held their nerves for the final ten minutes and not conceded any further goals after going 2-1 ahead. Surprisingly, Chelsea have got the most easiest FA Cup quarter finals tie by far.

The Blues have drawn League One outfit Port Vale and will most likely get the better of them without having to break much sweat. If Wrexham had kept off Josh Acheampong from scoring a quick 2-2 equaliser, they could very well have reaped the rewards with the easiest FA Cup quarter finals draw on offer.
Agreed, Port Vale shouldn’t be underestimated but Wrexham will be the massive favourites while battling them for a place in the FA Cup semis. For a team that is yet to taste an FA Cup semifinal evening, this Port Vale draw will have been a blessing in disguise.
Only, if Wrexham stayed resolute enough to deny Chelsea a way back in the game. That didn’t happened, still the Reds have a lot to be proud of themselves for proving their mettle in front of 3 teams ranked higher than them in the English football landscape.
Whether Chelsea goes on to win the FA Cup in two months time, remains to be seen. Meanwhile, Wrexham fans focus will turn towards the Hull City game that is about to kick-off in a few minutes. Hopefully, another three points are on the way for the home team tonight at the Racecourse.
