Wrexham fan favourite Jacob Mendy joins Peterborough United

He is none other than former Wrexham fullback Jacob Mendy. The Reds had already moved past him in the left-back department with Liberato Cacace and George Thomason taking his starting role for the current season.

Quite similar to legendary striker Paul Mullin, Wrexham thrashed a loan deal with Peterborough United to send Mendy back to League One surroundings. Unlike Mullin, Mendy struggled massively with his fitness but fortunately, the Posh haven’t given up on his calibre.

Jacob Mendy’s Wrexham career

Since arriving at the Racecourse from the then fellow National League outfut Boreham Wood in 2022, Jacob Mendy has taken to the pitch for Wrexham 77 times. An enormous portion of that was during the National League promotion campaign and the following League Two one. During those campaigns, Mendy recorded 6 goals and laid off 5 assists for his teammates.

Among those half-dozen strikes, was one Paul Mullin assist from a counter-attack which Mendy finished home for the 2-1 lead. Yes, the Notts County game which Wrexham won in a thrilling 3-2 manner to climb back to the Football League pyramid.

Without a doubt, that’s Jacob Mendy’s biggest highlight moment at Wrexham. The fans took a nostalgic trip to that day, and fondly relived that Jacob Mendy tap-in when the defender’s permanent switch was announced.

One fan poured his emotions from that special Notts County evening. He said: “Worst part of this game is saying goodbye to players. Loved Mendy on the wing. Blazing speed, quality crosses and that critical goal against Notts County.”

Another Reds fan highlighted Mendy’s international pedigree despite playing in lower divisions with Wrexham all these years. He added: “All the very best to you Jacob. A huge part of our first two promotions and the first ever Wrexham player to represent an African nation.”

Last month, starting right wing-back Issa Kabore also participated in the AFCON for Burkina Faso. Hopefully, he also leaves a brilliant legacy as Mendy did here, albeit in terms of Championship and Premier League performances.

A third fan pointed out a strange transfer deadline day coincidence. He noted: “Not one but TWO of the scorers from that iconic day vs notts county departing the club on same day.” The other exit talked about is Elliot Lee’s six-month loan to League One outfit Doncaster Rovers.

Paul Mullin was the remaining goalscorer, who left a few days back than the duo. However, all 3 of them have ended up in League One as of now meaning their paths are set to cross multiple times until the end of the campaign.
