‘Stinker’ – Wrexham fans blame one player despite 5-3 Ipswich Town win

Wrexham fans are pointing fingers at one player for making the 5-3 Ipswich Town win seem much more tougher than it should have been.

Scoring 5 goals in a Championship game is often dubbed a five star performance. At Sheffield United, the Reds ran riot with a 5-3 win that won hearts among the Racecourse faithful. Likewise, the home fans again have plenty of good reasons to remember this Ipswich Town thrashing.

Phil Parkinson’s men had only netted three times in as many games beforehand. Hence, watching Wrexham find their freely scoring touch was pleasing to the eyes alongside getting the all-important three points. However, not everything was picture perfect on the night.

Infact, Wrexham weren’t far from suffering a 3-2 defeat despite working hard to take the lead twice before half-time. The defensive show was quite appalling to say the least, and Wrexham fans are now pointing fingers at one player for making the 5-3 win a lot harder than it should have been.

Wrexham fans blame Max Cleworth despite 5-3 Ipswich Town win

Just minutes after Kieffer Moore fetched the 1-0 lead, Ipswich Town midfielder Jack Taylor slid a pass in the box which Max Cleworth couldn’t block in the first place. Then, Arthur Okonkwo also fumbled the ball he should have got hold of well.

Many Wrexham fans were irritated watching this sequence of mistakes. One of them wrote: “Cleworth and Okonkwo have been horrible today. 2 goals by two mistakes.”

Later, Josh Windass found the back of the net with a deflected header for the 2-1 goal. Again, the Blues advanced further and took advantage of Max Cleworth’s horrible positioning to leave it to Ivan Azon for the 2-2 equaliser.

When that attack started, Cleworth had already left acres of space behind which was an utter rookie mistake as a regular starter. Fans called him out for another terrible performance because it wasn’t the first time Cleworth failed to do the centre-back basics in February.

A second fan added: “Haven’t seen a stinker this bad from Max Cleworth since… Tuesday”

At Bristol City, Cleworth never really stepped up with blocks and interceptions which was quite odd to see. Previously, the 23-year-old miscued the ball into his own net against Millwall without any striker pressuring him inside the box.

Something is wrong with Cleworth right now. Perhaps, he might be dealing with a small knock at present or feeling the promotion nerves because the playoffs race is heating up. Whatever be the case, his flop shows aren’t going unnoticed by the Reds fanbase.

A third fan even blamed this dip in form on Max Cleworth’s contract extension in January. He said: “Been poor since he signed his new contract.”

To be honest, it’s not fair to criticise Wrexham for tying Cleworth to a new deal mid season. Many times, star players make up their mind to leave in the summer transfer window and then it becomes an uphill task to get them to pen a new contract at the club.

Cleworth is a top defensive asset for Wrexham and the club knows that he will quickly get over this rough spell. Nevertheless, the Championship games keep coming thick and fast in the meantime. One Wrexham fan proposed a sensible idea to manage these upcoming fixtures without overburdening Cleworth with more responsibilities.

He suggested: “He’s(Cleworth) young and bound to happen, he’s be fine, but you can see Vyner coming asap.”

Zak Vyner’s Wrexham debut was slated to come on the Bristol City game, but that also got postponed till yesterday’s Ipswich Town win.

He replaced Ben Sheaf in defensive midfield and looked decent in his ten minute cameo. Trying Vyner along Hyam and Doyle will be a good idea against Portsmouth in 2 days time.
