‘Player of the season’ – Wrexham fans delighted with Dom Hyam’s Scotland call-up

Wrexham fans congratulate club captain Dom Hyam for his Scotland call-up ahead of the March International break.

Wrexham’s upcoming games against Watford and Sheffield United lead into the March international break. The club is keeping a close eye on the call‑ups from their squad to monitor the minutes their key players log away before the final stretch of the season.

Despite their lengthy injury list, Wrexham still have several players heading off on international duty during the March break. The full list of call-ups:

Wales (WC qualifiers): Danny Ward, Nathan Broadhead

Scotland (friendlies): Dom Hyam

Jamaica (WC qualifiers): Bailey Cadamarteri

Burkina Faso (friendlies): Issa Kaboré

While every international call-up is a source of pride for Wrexham fans, there’s something especially meaningful about Dom Hyam’s selection. With just one senior cap for Scotland to his name before this call-up, it is a rare opportunity for the captain to represent his country once again.

Wrexham AFC congratulated the club captain for his Scotland squad selection, quoting: “Dom Hyam has received a call-up for Scotland ahead of their international fixtures later this month. Congratulations, Dom”

March International break is decisive for Dom Hyam

Dom Hyam’s career has been a tale of two stories. While he has enjoyed an impressive club journey with over 400 senior appearances, his international career has yet to take off.

As mentioned above, Dom Hyam has only one cap for Scotland, which came as a substitute against Norway in the Euro 2024 qualifiers. Ever since then, his international career has followed a sporadic path.

Though Hyam ended his long wait for a call-up last September, he remained an unused substitute in both of Scotland’s World Cup qualifiers. Factoring in all this, the recent March call-up is extremely decisive for Hyam to revive his Scotland career.

Scotland’s upcoming friendlies against Japan, Curaçao, and the Ivory Coast could be Dom Hyam’s last chance to impress manager Steve Clarke. Currently, he sits behind priority centre‑back options like John Souttar, Scott McKenna, Grant Hanley, and Kieran Tierney. If that pecking order holds, Hyam risks being left out of the World Cup squad entirely.

For now, Dom Hyam has likely been included as a squad depth option for this March break following his consistent performances for Wrexham. The club captain will need a couple of standout performances for Scotland to secure a place on the plane to the 2026 World Cup.

Wrexham fans react to Dom Hyam’s Scotland call-up

While Hyam’s importance is underrated in the current Scotland setup, Wrexham fans know exactly what the defender brings to the table. The faithful have congratulated him on his call-up while hyping him ahead of a decisive spell.

One Wrexham fan mentioned: “Well deserved Dom. He’s been outstanding for us and what a leader he’s been. I’m sure that Max has learned so much from playing alongside him.”

Hyam’s reliability and leadership in the backline have stood out for Wrexham fans. Not only does the defender provide solid cover to Arthur Okonkwo as the central CB, but he also leads by example to young teammates Callum Doyle and Max Cleworth.

It’s due to this ability that some supporters are already vouching for Dom Hyam as a Wrexham player of the season contender.

A Wrexham supporter said, “Has been so consistent all season, got the arm band and is a great leader, has to be one of the picks for player of the season.”

Ever since completing a move from Blackburn, Dom Hyam has been exceptionally consistent for Wrexham. While fans wondered who would step up after the departure of fan‑favourite James McClean, Hyam has stepped up in a big way and hasn’t let his absence as a leader be felt.

However, Dom Hyam faces stiff competition for the Player of the Season award from his defensive partner, Callum Doyle.

While Hyam’s consistency has been unmatched, Doyle’s extraordinary performances in the second half of the season haven’t gone unnoticed by the fans. If Wrexham secure promotion this season, it could all come down to a nail‑biting contest between the two centre‑backs.
