‘Wasted him’ – Wrexham fans don’t want Adam Armstrong signing in January

Adam Armstrong signing

Wrexham fans don’t want Adam Armstrong signing in the January transfer window despite recent transfer rumours.

Since yesterday, Wrexham are constantly getting linked to Southampton striker Adam Armstrong as a January transfer target. A potential £15m transfer fee has been floated around in the rumour, which feels quite justified for a player chasing the Championship golden boot this season.

However, Wrexham wants to gain promotion to the Premier League and not necessarily brag about having the league’s topscorer in their ranks. Like with every transfer rumour that comes around, there are going to be a couple of transfer winners and a select few transfer losers from Wrexham’s point of view.

Fans are also entitled to their opinions during potential signing matters. The Reds fanbase couldn’t digest the fact that £19m Sidiki Cherif only had 4 goals to show for this season. Atleast, Adam Armstrong has eleven strikes to his name which is comparatively better but not enough for Wrexham fans to argue against the 28-year-old Southampton striker’s signing.

Needless to say, Wrexham are only expected to add one of Sidiki Cherif or Adam Armstrong to the side. One fan doesn’t feel the need to bring either of them. He said: “neither of them add anything, better choices out there.”

Another reason fans have found to discard Armstrong’s signing is his awful past with Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson. During the 2017/18 Championship season, the duo were together at Bolton Wanderers who had very recently gained promotion to the second tier.

Although Bolton managed to retain their Championship status that season, they only did so just. A struggling league season meant multiple poor performers in the squad, one of them was Adam Armstrong himself.

With only 3 goals across the campaign it’s safe to say Armstrong’s career didn’t work out well under Parkinson before. A concerned Wrexham fan conveyed these thoughts, saying: “Well i can tell you. He’s played under parky before and he tried to stick him on the left wing and wasted him.”

It’s quite possible that Armstrong couldn’t adapt to Parkinson’s left-wing demands at Bolton. However, the Reds boss shouldn’t repeat that mistake after so many years.

£15m will break Wrexham’s signing record right away, and watching those transfer funds go to waste with Armstrong left to struggle at the left-wing won’t appeal to Wrexham fans. Looking at the English striker’s career, it’s worth noting that Armstrong has been bought for £15m before.

In 2021, Southampton paid that massive price for him to prize him away from the rough and tough of the Championship. Five years later, Armstrong is again being billed at the same asking price. This is irritating Wrexham fans who hoped for a cut-price transfer fee for a forward who will soon reach 30 in just over a year from now.

A third fan sarcastically remarked: “£15m surely that’s a typo.” On the transfer fee topic, one Southampton fan also jumped in the discussion. He joked, “I’ll drive him there for 15 million!”

There was a similar joke doing the rounds on social media when Wrexham signed Kieffer Moore from Sheffield United in 2025. The Blades fanbase were quite delighted to see the back of Moore and made a similar lift joke in July. However, their fun lasted only five months.

Kieffer Moore got off to arguably his career best start to a season, and bagged 2 goals against Sheffield United during Wrexham’s 5-3 win on Boxing Day. After that, the Reds responded to that Kieffer Moore lift claim which felt quite satisfying from Wrexham’s point of view.

Still, Moore’s signing wasn’t as expensive as the proposed Armstrong deal and hence, there was a minimal risk involved for Wrexham. With Armstrong, there’s a significant transfer figure in question. Let’s see what Wrexham do from here.
